MH of course. The blue spectrum helps keep the plant short and bushy.. with node's close together. My MH runs on average 10 degrees cooler than the HPS as well.

I'm a cab grower and I actually run my MH up until about 10-15 days into flower before I flip to the HPS and it really helps.

Both work, though.

hey tank do u run an op bigger than say 1k? if not just use flourescents to veg.
you want a blue leaning color for the vegetative state (tight nodal spacing)
but some red helps too (noticably lusher growth).
usin flourescents, you have more play economically, and can use a good mix of lamps.
the prefered lamps for 'veg' are marketed as 'full spectrum' or 'daylight' .
these are typically very blue in appearance. however standard 'Cool White aka 'CW' work fine.
these 'blue' colored bulbs combined with the warm white, more red colored lamps--
in say, a (6)lightF40T12 pan fixture [burnin (6)40w 4ft tubes], would be ideal for early 'veg'
and give you the best of both worlds. plants must stay within 1" from the tops tho.
and u may need a few supplemental Compacts (CFL) on the sides. again, nearly touching the plants.
they dont get hot but keep a fan rustling the foliage 24/7 as to not singe the foliage just in case

If you insist upon HID for veg, go with Halide, or MH/HPS combined. heavier on the blue (MH).
as stated above, both will work, the plants just react differently to the diferent types of light.
you shouldnt have browning leaves and curling.
that sounds like an issue seperate from COLOR of the light :nono: got pics mo?

I cant even see the difference between MH and HPS in my grows. And Ive been growing mj for nearly 20 years in soil and a few years in hydro.
I get way more females from seed and just as tight internode spacing with HPS than MH,... contrary to what people say
...This could have something to do with the ceramic high temp paint with titanium dioxide that I used for my reflector too. Im sure someone has an opinion on this as well though.

I think its just a matter of preference IMO.
WHatever you decide...Good luck bro

thanks everyone i appreciate the help, capitano i have 400watt op this is my second indoor grow actually just getting them ready for outdoors. last grow in veg i used the mh with great results. i dont know why i havent switched back i couldnt remember what i read was better for veg. Stretchpuppy if the mh as you say runs cooler than the hps? then i'm switching. for one i had my light to close and some leaves curled. not bad enough where they wont recover though.

yea i put themh bulb back in this morning, but i fucked up i forgot to switch my ballast back to mh from hps. it ran ok i guess i just switched it back and turned it on and it lit up Thank God!!!

MH for sure in VEG.
The best way is to use floros (cool white daylights 40W)until they are about 6'' to 8'' or so and then start getting them used to HID by putting them under it for short periods at first with the bulb height being not close at all...if anything you want the bulb far from the tops at first.
ALL my plants really seem to LOVE that floro light...makes them nice and strong and green...so you gotta ween em off of it:)
peace

by the way tankgunner - it sounds like you may have either light bleached or lightly burned your leaves if they are curling in reaction to your HPS lamp.
Some strains are notoriously sensitive to light....I imagine this is enormously overlooked by many a grower..
Did you just one day immediately stick them under the HPS lamp with it close to the tops? How tall were they when placed under the HPS?
peace

its not a matter of preference. bluer light makes for tighter spacing. reason u dont/havent seen a differenc is because HIDs have to be kept a good distance from the plants.
try a cool colored CFL or 3 within a few cm of the foliage and get back to us.

if its betweeen mh OR hps, use the mh. peace n love

You being a cab grower you might wanna exclusively grow with MH . Check out tha Blue spec . bulbs . However , I grow with vertically hung , bare bulbs and need tha stretch so I prefer tha sodium , though I do have acoupla MH's .

if you veg under a 1000w hps the growth is spectacular, i've never seen so strong, tight noded, lush, plants ever. the one wierd thing i noticed though is the stems get so strong they grow bark on them. MH's give good results, HPS give good results, fluorescents give good results, just depends how well your setup. if i ever had to use just 1 light it would be a HPS hands down.

ckeck this out, i checked my plants this morning right? well since i installed the mh bulb yesterday the differance is unreal they seem to be on roids. it's so cool that they have already started to recover so well. SICKsKILLS, they were exactly as you described bleached and leaves curled up. but looking much better now they are nevilles haze hybrid and special skunk from female seeds. my freebies are stonehedge and s.a.durban x skunk#1.
