Medical Pot Advocate Shot, wounds robber at home

An outspoken advocate for medical marijuana was wounded early Monday but managed to shoot a burglar at a Kirkland house where he grew pot legally.

Sheriff's deputies are looking for two other suspects who may have been involved in the attempted home-invasion robbery.

Detectives also are investigating whether the attempted home invasion is tied to a similar incident in January at the Kirkland house.

The home in the 11400 block of Juanita Drive Northeast -- part of unincorporated King County near Kirkland -- is known to deputies for legal medical marijuana grows.

About 4:45 a.m. Monday, a woman called 911 saying there were intruders in the house and that her boyfriend was shot, a sheriff's office spokesman said. Responding deputies were preparing to go onto the property when dispatchers received another call from a man saying he'd been shot -- a man later identified as a robbery suspect.

That 19-year-old Renton man and the 59-year-old resident, Steve Sarich, had traded shots, according to investigators. The teen was hit multiple times and rushed to Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Sarich, who has publicly advocated for medical marijuana laws for years, was taken to a hospital for minor wounds from shotgun pellets, according to deputies.

I know Steve. Glad he came out ok.

Got this off the Seattle PI.

Another example of where having a gun at the grow saved the growers life.
Like the boy scouts say, be prepared.
Because sometimes your at home, taking care of your plants and minding your own business, and bullshit comes looking for you.

Good to hear he came out ok for the most part.

Make sure you dial .357 before you pick up the phone and dial 911. Who knows if that kid would have killed him if he didn't have a gun. Just another reason why prohibition is bullshit.

Always keep a weapon with you and make you can sure you can use it. Violence isn't always necessary but in this case it was.

So... any word on the Search LEO was doing last night pertaining to medical marijuana..???

You know... if fuckers were robbing banks.... like they are killing and robbing cannabis patients.... the pigs would be on the T.V. telling the city... we are going to catch these criminals and THEY WILL BE PUNISHED....

But with cannabis.... its.... Well... what did you expect??? .... and these young punks think... ahhhh.. if we rob a cannabis patient... chances are.. he won't even call the cops... and of course.. the cops are in no hurry to let the public know that this type of shit... WILL BE DEALT WITH...

I'm glad Steve is ok.... he is a good dude... I just hope they don't go after him.... It is still a FEDERAL FELONY to use a firearm in the commision of a drug felony... and it carries a MANDATORY 5 years for that alone....

Steve saved his life and possibly the lives of others there at the time.... and HE HAD EVERY FUCKING RIGHT TO DO THIS SHIT...

THESE YOUNG PUNKS NEED TO KNOW... WE ARE NOT CRIMINALS.. WE ARE NOT AN EASY TARGET... THERE IS NO DIFFERNCE BETWEEN ROBBING A STORE AND ROBBING A MEDICAL MARIJUANA GARDEN..

BOTH CAN GET YOU KILLED... AND BOTH WILL SEND YOU TO PRISON....

As it should be..

An article from today.. ON POINT!

Hours after a Kirkland man was shot at by masked robbers Monday, detectives searched his home where he grows medicinal marijuana. The violent crime has sparked a new debate about how police and prosecutors view the legal use of marijuana.

Medical marijuana activist, Steve Sarich, was shot at his home early Monday morning during a home invasion. As many as four suspects are believed to have been involved.

The King County Sheriff decided to get a search warrant and comb Sarich's Finn Hill home.

"I've been shot and now I'm going to be robbed by the people who came to investigate it," Sarich told KIRO Radio. "They will use anything. They will go 'We smell marijuana' and that's enough for them to go in and raid."

Nonsense, said King County Sheriff's Sergeant John Urquhart. "We run across this medical marijuana on a regular basis and when we are able to determine, and sometimes it's difficult, but when we determine it's legal, we walk away. We leave their dope, we leave their marijuana, we leave their plants, and we walk away. We're not interested in targeting those types of people."

Sarich said there are 7,000 patients like him in Washington. People who grow and use medical marijuana don't have to register with the state and they don't need a prescription. The state's medical marijuana law says all they need is a recommendation from their doctor.

"We have more than one license here. We're only designated providers for one patient at a time," Sarich said.

But the law is vague and Urquhart said it's reasonable to investigate Sarich's marijuana plants. "We've gone to grow operations where there are plants well in excess of what's legally allowed for one person and they claim 'Well, I'm growing it for other people as well.' Is that within the statue, is that within the intent of the statute? We don't really know."

Urquhart said he's suspicious that Sarich is growing marijuana not just for himself and one other patient.

"If you talk to the neighbors who are pretty outraged by the number of people coming and going, the seminars that he's having, and how he's handling all of this; these are allegations we need to look into and figure out what's really going on in that house. That's what part of the search warrant is intended to do," said Urquhart.

"If you don't like that, get the law changed. My advice to anybody is if you don't like a law, we'll help you. We will enforce it. The best way to get rid of a bad law is to enforce it."

Thanks for the added post Berger!

Just seems that (esp w the economy) ppl are looking to shoot angles (rip) all the time. A young, punk kid sees this local advocate & identifies as an "easy" target. Does the deed seeing if crime really pays, which it does some times...

High profile figures have got to reason ppl are going to target him. Even if fully legal & above the board... would never grow where I shit & ate & slept w my wife (if I had one). At the very least, arm myself, which I am glad to see another person willing to pull the trigger over an issue like life & death. Mad props for him there.

But as pointed out... the norm is to consider him the 'criminal' & esp as a public fig, to go after him to make a point... however wrong & silly it might be.

The community/neighbors won't get the whole picture, just the snap headline of "MMj, guns, people shot, crime."

Unfortunate as this might be, can almost guarantee this type of lead/result... shame...

This is one of the reasons I do not support banning personal firearms for people with a non violent crimminal record.

Y'know, when robbers rob people of money, the same kind of thing is reported. I wouldn't infer too much from this not being a big report.

Yes, prohibition is stupid and immoral. Yes, the current perception of pot is completely wrong. However, I wouldn't LOOK for discrimination. It's the same as racism. Some people think EVERYONE is racist and every act by every person is racist. And I don't think that's the way to go. Not everyone is against us. In fact, the fewest percentage of people are against us at this moment in the history of the world probably (at least since this reefer madness has started).

So pathetic! Those rippers are lucky Steve didn't give them the death penalty!

I can assure you, should I be assaulted in such a manner, NOBODY but family would walk away from that!

Robbing physically ill patients trying to provide for themselves is DESPICABLE! All I can say is

BEWARE, Y'ALL!

FLYING GOAT & HER FAMILY ARE WELL-ARMED & CAN SHOOT THE EYE OUT OF A SQUIRREL AT 50 PACES...

TRESPASSERS WILL BE SHOT & SURVIVORS WILL BE SHOT AGAIN!

Other than that, I'm a kind, compassionate, gentle human being...

Good thing it went down in a medical state, because otherwise the owner's firearm would count against him as a felony multiplier when/if the fuzz charged him with possession, distribution, and manufacturing regardless of who the aggressor was in the situation.
castle laws only protect for self-defense.

Yep I saw this earlier on Yahoo, I can't believe the shit we have to go through to provide medicine. Too bad it's illegal to impale dead rippers' heads on pikes in the front yard, some good old medieval "don't fuck with this place" karma, that!

I just finished watching a video on MSNBC about a med grower who was hit over the head with a crowbar and killed while trying to defend his crop. Lucky this fellow got away alright.

Note To Rippers: Some won't hesitate to to snuff you out. All you have to do is assault or trespass.
