Media Transfer thread

The main purpose of this thread is Hi8 or vcr to dvd transfer. I have an old vcr and not sure how much longer it will last. I was reviewing an old tape on there, this one was my brother's high school graduation but I am sure there are others of me too. Either way, I am approaching the 5 year anniversary of my mom's loss and such memories are too precious to lose. (there is footage dating back to '92 or '93 and may have earlier footage) So:

Is there a way to quickly and easily transfer from one to the other and if possible leave open the possibility of editing out bad sections?

Also, is there a way to repair those corrupted hard little floppies or vcr tapes with lines or jumping footage in them? thanks!

edit: I currently have no working dvd recorder, I'd prefer some device that can bypass that if possible and directly transfer to a computer or other device.

I'm looking for a place to send old vhs tapes we made from old 8mm tape. Family movies from long ago. ,There's a place online that will also do individual photos etc. Don't know if they do what they say or not but will find out soon

There are DVD/VCR combo machines you can buy, I've had either 2 or 3 since 2004 and I have converted just about all my old VCR tapes onto blank DVDs including home movies. I'm happy with the results, if it plays the tape in good quality then it should be good quality on the DVD too. Once it is on DVD it is easy to put onto a computer

I'd also like to know how to fix bad areas (like fuzz and flickering) on old VHS tapes, so far I have noticed it depends how well the individual VCRs read the tape. One tape wouldn't even play in one of my VCRs but I tried it in another one and it played just well enough for me to get it onto DVD
