What makes a 'meal'? like bone meal, alfalfa meal, kelp meal, etc. Does it mean processed? or treated?

What is kelp meal. Is it just chopped up kelp? Is kelp extract just kelp meal soaked in water, strained and reduced?

Meal is anything ground up or pulverized ... kelp, bones, grains.

meal

1. grain (especially. maize, rye, or oats) that is coarsely ground and unbolted; also, a kind of flour made from beans, pease, etc.; sometimes, any flour, esp. If coarse.

2. Any substance that is coarsely pulverized like meal, but not granulated. Meal beetle, the larva of a beetle (tenebrio molitor) which infests granaries, bakehouses, etc, and is very injurious to flour and meal.

Origin: OE. Mele, AS. Melu, melo; akin to D. Meel, G. Mehl, OHG. Melo, Icel. Mjol, SW. Mjol, Dan. Meel, also to D. Malen to grind, G. Mahlen, OHG, OS, & Goth. Malan, Icel. Mala, W. Malu, L. Molere, Gr. Mill, and E. Mill. Cf. Mill, Mold soil, Mole an animal, Immolate, Molar.

Blynx, some great questions coming from you lately. I can tell you're a beginner who's going to have a very steep learning curve over the next few months... a great curious mind you have. Gonna serve you well, in the form of big fat buds. =)

Thanks, just finished a rather pitiful grow that was a struggle at the beginning. Have been reading tons of icmag since then and have been slowly learning through trying. The plants ended up small but definately keepers, so they are revegging. From what I've learned here and used to improve things, the new seedlings are bigger and stronger in a month than the first attempt was at the end.

Nice. You owe much of it to your curious nature, blynx. And of course to the masters here like BC, vonforme, BurnOne, Suby, 3LB, etc. etc. This is such a great resource for those of us still learning the basics.

+1 That's the kind of new grower that succeeds. Ask questions and have fewer failures. Great job.
