Mary-Kate Olsen Goes Solo on 'Weeds'

LOS ANGELES (May 24) -- In her first major solo role without her twin sister, Mary-Kate Olsen is returning to series television for the first time since 2002 with a co-starring role on Showtime's dark comedy "Weeds."

Olsen will play Tara, a devoted Christian girl living in the newly developed megachurch community Majestic who becomes a love interest for Nancy Botwin's (Mary-Louise Parker) son Silas (Hunter Parrish). Olsen will appear in 10 of the 15 episodes of the show's third season, which premieres August 13



Olsen's role on the edgy Showtime series about a pot-dealing mom (Parker) also is a departure from the wholesome, PG characters she and her sister have played and opens a new chapter in her acting career. Olsen's treatment in 2004 for an eating disorder was widely reported.

"'Weeds' isn't your 8 o'clock family fare," series creator and executive producer Jenji Kohan said. "It's an adult show with adult subject matter, and we're confident Mary-Kate is right for the role. She came in and read with Hunter and was absolutely charming and real and seemed like a great fit. Audiences have seen only one side of Mary-Kate, but here we'll see her in a whole new light."

In addition to Olsen, joining the "Weeds" cast this upcoming season is previously announced Matthew Modine .

Yer right Bro,i think it will be funny,i just meant,it started out(as far as advertising went before the show premiered)supposed to be kinda serious and true to the real.But now that it has shifted to being kinda funny and stil about the buds i think it will be funny to see how they have her interact.I wonder if she will ever get the munchies,then she will have to eat as part of the show,this could be a good thing for her,lol.Keepit frosty,RMM

i really dislike that show, i don't think it is helpful to the movement at all...if someone operated the way she does in that show they would be busted in about two months, if that...

I've watched Weeds, it tries to straddle both the pot and suburban dystopia genres, becoming some kind of ridiculous frankenstein. I've stopped because its so fucking stupid, the writing is awful, etc etc etc.

i like it... is not emmy award winner, but the uncle is hilarious and reminds me of my stepbrother. i dont think it paints weed in to negative a light either IMO. has a councilmen/accountant stoner, and a lot of anti pot people dont even think a pothead can be much outside of a burgerflipper.

Okay lets consider it's lack of verisimilitude. She starts off selling ghetto schwag to suburbanites. We all know potheads with plenty of money don't bother with schwag.

Secondly her margins wouldn't be that great, but she's supposedly making enough to support her family and has to start a bakery to launder her big cashflow. The writers must be clueless idiots.

The uncle is a cool character. Kevin Nealon's character is annoying. The actress that plays the mom is shitty, always has the same facial expression no matter what the scene, and can barely manage to alter her tone.

One compliment... The intro song, Little Boxes, is a great folk tune, and its doubly-cool that they have different people cover it each episode...

But that Dexter show is cooooooooooool. Probably because of the main actor, the dude from Six Feet Under. It's basically a ripoff of Blade (vampire killing other vampires so he's a good guy / serial killer killing other serial killers so he's a good guy) but the writing is pretty good, sometimes great.

Lol it's stupid when celebs build an image and then try to change it. I dunno it makes me think they have something to prove, I really don't like Mary Kate, but I am happy to know that season 3 will be out right around the time my harvest will be ready. I'll be watching it every week .

im just happy for season 3!!!! love the show, i don't care how unrealistic/bad for the movement it is. people outside 'the movement" just see it as a straight up comedy, and besides, it makes cannabis seem like more of a normal way of life when they show the wide varieties of characters using. i guess one scene ill always hate is when nancy was in the dispensary and craigx asked this skateboarder how his arthritis was or something. that scene put a bad taste in my mouth, kinda just said that people are abusing the system

well said. i like the show for the most part altough i do agree that some of the stories and storylines are a bit far fetched
