hey buddy-
sorry i can't be around more lately, but it looks like you're progressing well. GREAT spot on that pic of Dan Patrick!! made me laugh. i do sprout in rockwool, yes. however, i put seedlings into organic soil. i grow them out to maturity in soil, in my 'mom' cabinet. then after they mature and show sex, i clone them, and put them in the bio-bucket tent to flower out and see what we got. i'm a small op, so i am constantly on strain hunts. popping seeds and flowering them out searching for desireable traits to keep as moms. kind of slow progression, but i'm not in a hurry anyhow. usually, the yield from 1 bio-bucket grow can keep me green for months, sometimes well over a year. I'm still smoking on stuff from my last posted grow. that 1 yielded about 1.5 lbs. not bad for only 3 buckets, i think. i'm guessing because i really don't weigh my harvests. i just assume about an ounce goes into each jar.
as far as lava rocks go, use what you can find. i'm telling you: go to the bbq grill section and find a plastic bag that has replacement lava rocks for propane grills. i'll find a pic of what i'm talking about and post it next. get these, usually they are mixed red and black. they are a little large so you have to break them up smaller. rinse the shit out of them and use them, they work fine, i do it all the time.
this is what i usually find at my local Home Depot or Lowes:
you gotta look in the section with repair/replacement parts for propane bbq grills. try 1 more time and i'm sure you'll find them. cheap too, maybe around 5-8 bucks. in my experience, nothing beats lava as a medium for bio-buckets. when your system is fully populated with bennies, you may be able to see them like in this pic:
see that build up on the lava rocks. btw, those rocks were a little large, but worked out ok.
also, be careful putting so many additives in your system. stuff like root accel, contain enzymes and such which can compete with the bennies. over the years, i found that all i need to use is this:
seriously. from start to finish. no veg formula, no root enhancers, no sugar boosters, nothing else. this stuff is cheap and great. i keep ppms real low too. bio-buckets make everything so available to the plants in a usable form, you can feed real low strengths without a problem.
just some advice bro, looking forward to seeing how this all comes together in this run for you
Well my photo album of RQ Critical is coming to an end. Today marks day 50 of flower, the breeder says that this is a 7 week strain so I should be good chop any day. If I want some of this girl by xmas I should chop today but at the very least I could have some butter by then even if I let her go another week or two, what do you guys think? Chop or Wait?
Hey Raziel, good to meet you. Bud is looking tasty. Can't help with harvest times without seeing macros of the trichs. That is really the only way to tell. I don't know your experience level as a grower, but beginners tend to chop early. A lot can happen in the last 2 weeks of ripening. I know its real hard to let them go, but its almost always worth the wait. But, in the end, its your bud to do with what you want. From what I've seen, looks like ur doing a nice job. If you haven't already, read Simon's sticky on harvesting/curing. Best write up I've seen on the subject.
Marineman- what's up buddy. Props on your last build, looks great man!
Thanks CM for the info, you know I've read so many of your threads that I thought I met you already, anyway. I've looked for Simon's sticky on harvesting/curing but so far its been a bust, but I'll keep searching. Yes I'm a new, slowly gaining experience, grower so I think I'll do both of the wrongs, maybe not, but here's what I'm going to do.
I'll pull 1/2 to 2/3's of the plant and leave the older looking buds on for a while longer. That way I can have something that'll give me a Sativa type high and one that will give a Indica type high, that way I can see which one I like the best.
Hey marineman how's your girls doing? I had a couple of seedling going that succumbed to SSD so I guess I'll try again.
Cravin: Good to see you back bro! Missed ya around here.
Finding that black lava rock has been tough bro, I tried every store in like a 100 mile radius around here and none of them carry the black just the red. Not even seasonally! Im running with just red this run while i keep looking for some black, either way its a big step up from the Hydroton of last run. Might have to special order some, but im sure the shipping wouldnt be cheap.
Also, I had to find out the hard way not to use all the additives, so now after 3 full cleans of the system, I picked up some dynagro grow, bloom and calmag. I am running an RO system now, and found out I would need to supplement like calmag. Im kind of curious how you feel about RO over tap water crave.
Hey Raz! Yeah id wait as long as you can possibly stand it to cut the girls, Its deff worth it. They just look tasty as hell! Oh that post cravin was speaking about is this one: https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?threadid=156237
It really does take any and all guess work out of the picture, I used the same technique to jar my last harvest, and it worked perfect.
My girls are coming along, just think they took a hit when they were moved a bunch of times cause of me having to clean the system so many times. But were back on track now and hoping im problem free from here on out. I also came to the realization that I now think I didnt have the true cyanobacteria, and think it was just an over abundance of bacteria from the additives I was using. But thats how ya learn. Ill get some pics up in the next few days.
Thanks man for the link. I found that one but I didn't think it was the right one, I was looking for one that could give me the milestones to look for (other than trichome testing) to tell when chop time was coming. I was trying to figure out when I should start the flush and stuff.
I went ahead and chopped all the lower growth, I think I did it assbackwards, and took off 409g of bud and popcorn wet. She still looks like she's got about 3 zips worth of bud still on her though. I got a before cut picture in my album just so you can see the difference. I'm going to let the rest of the plant be until this weekend and will chop the rest. I'm even thinking about revegging her after all is said and done.
Hey raz, looking good bro. Ive heard you want to start flushing about 2 weeks before harvest, now thats just what ive read, Id do a little more research before I committed to it, but that seems to be the general consensus. And as far as trichromes go, might want to ask cravin that one, he told me last run to watch for the tri's to start turning a golden color, and thats when youre right around ready. But he would know better than me.
So I decided to be patient this morning and I think I will let my current girls grow out a little, pick the best one, move it to soil and take cuttings from it, instead of running 5 different seeds and hoping they come out even. That will give me a chance to try out using coco instead of rockwool.
Also raz, i think i might try my hand at scrogging this round, and if i do im gonna need to pick your brain on the subject. Just seems like a great way to really up the yield.
NP pick all you want that's how I got it btw. I put what I chopped on the scale and got 66g dry now they are out the bags and in a couple of mason jars with the boveda 62% for the cure. I took a look at the trichs this morning and its looking good, mostly cloudy and a lot more amber than clear, I will probably chop the second half monday.
So i know its been about 2 weeks since I updated, but were back on track now.
Lets start with the water, what I originally thought was cyanobacteria and fungus turned out to be exactly what this system is designed to create, the benne bacteria. I couldnt figure out why the fuck I would clean everything and all would be great for 2 weeks, then I would start to see growth on the rocks and SUPER cloudy water. Now Cravin has told and showed me that with the system you will get growth on the lava rock, but I had never seen it for myslef and therefor couldnt identify it correctly. What really threw me though, was the super cloudy water throughout the system. I never saw a still pic of the water in cravins system.
Lets go over the system pics then in the next post ill go over the lady and root pics.
This on is of the rez, the water is about 6 inches deep and my hand is on the bottom of the rez. You can see how opaque the water is. All of it is benne bacteria.
This is a top layer shot of the water in the buckets, you can see all the floaties.
Heres just another pic from a diff angle of the buckets, notice how you cant see bottom or barely make out the green downspout hose. Thats all them bennes.
Here are two shots of the growth on the lava rock. This is what I miss took for fungus.
So i wanted to go over that because as I found out, there is no user manual for this system yet, and if it can help people ID what to look for when starting this system and save time, then im glad to do it. I did alot of searching of bio bucket threads and there is very little info on people using them (excluding Cravin and BigToke). So I did start an all inclusive bio bucket thread.
Lets start with a pic I took right around xmas last week:
Heres a shot of the best looking one last week
And a shot of my best lady today:
You can literally see in the health of the plant, the second those roots hit the bacteria/nutrient rich water, cause they really perk up!
Heres a shot of my number 2 girl:
And a little root porn, fyi that root wasnt even breaking through the lava rock 3 days ago... and every single root they are putting out is PURE WHITE.
So as you can see, I just had to change my train of thinking and it has paid off big time. Im finally seeing for myself the benifits of bio buckets. I knew what was possible, just had to see it for myself.
Ill throw the stats up quick too:
Tent temp: 82f
Rez temp: 68-70f
Bucket temps: 69f
PPM: 160ppm
PH: 6.1
Light cycle: 24h on (mainly to keep temps steady, 5 below outside with windchill.) I do have a space heater outside the tent to keep temps steady. Ambient temp outside of the tent is around 64-68f.
As far as what ive been adding to the system, its just DynaGro Grow and a little DynaGro MagPro.
So my plan is to grow out the girls untill the are ready to take cuts from, and honestly its really a race between the two girls i posted pics of. Because the other three are progressing MUCH slower then the best two. And thats on me, they kept getting taken out and put back in the system, so for the good two to be doing so well says alot about the system itself. So ill take 10 cuts or so and put those in the buckets and put the mom in a Hempy style of system in my "currently being built" mom cab. I really want to see how much better it be to try using coco vs. rockwool. Expecting good results.
Sorry it took awhile for the update, but I was feeling pretty shitty untill everything clicked, now I got that mojo back!
I was gonna wait a few days to update, but theres been alot of growth in the last 24 hours. My number 2 girl quickly became my number 1 girl overnight.
Still some nice growth on new number 2
But since that huge root formed, heres new number 1.
And some nice root growth since yesterday
Really diggin my setup now... I think the reason my H2O is more cloudy than most BB H20, might have alot to due with my 1800gph pump. My buddy said go over kill on what the system needs, and I went way overkill, but I think its paying off, and the water just has more living bennes in it. Now thats just a theory, but one that makes sense.
Oh and from here on out im going to put my full trust in the bennes and not check or adjust ph. That ones a hard one to let go of, but i got faith.
Wasssssup MM? Hope you had a bang up time for the holiday's.
Well the two young'uns that I brought into this world 2 weeks before xmas didn't make it and I've been procrastinating about starting another family, now would be the time but I just can't seem to get the motivation up to get started.
My total dry weight off that single plant was 142g, soooo what's that? a little over 5 zips. I have about 3 zips left, gave out the other 2 zips for xmas and new year presents. Folks were really happy about the gifts, my older brother (who thinks he's the bbq king) got a halloween themed xmas gift, in his box where was a coffin with a picture of the burger king on it. The coffin said RIP, I changed the kings coat of arms to say BBQ. The card that was included said... To raise the king from the dead use the enclosed first. Inside the coffin was a spice bottle of dried herbs. Now how he uses those herbs is up to him but in my mind it should improve the flavor and enjoyment of any foods he decides to cook.
All girls finally took hold and are now looking amazing, when just a week or so ago, looked like shit. You can really see it when the roots hit that water, boom! They take off.
Heres a little root porn too. Roots looking very nice and are straight coke white.
Also something to note, i stuck to my word not to mess with the ph and havent. But i did check the ph and it was like 4 something, so I think thats a testament to the system and the bennes acting as a buffer. In any other system, my girls would be screaming bloody murder. Everything is coming out super green and I feel like to CO2 bag hanging in the tent is helping, so I may run a canister CO2 system on the next run.
One thing I have a question about, one of my girls wants to be different and play "one of us is not like the other." Take a look at these two side by side.
Notice how first one is super busy with really wide leaves and the left is no nearly as bushy ( i did have to trim a few leaves of her) as the first and has super narrow, almost indica type leaves? Anyone recognize the second one? Oh and the second has a mauve stem when the rest are green. Now im sure something got mixed up at the seed "factory." But just curious if anyone can ID it.
Everything is going perfect, im seeing some amazing growth.
Even our unknown tag along is doing nicely
And some nice root growth
Ive been trying to push the limit of nute ppm level, because I dont think im going to need more than a few more weeks of veg before i flip to flower. Right now its about 650ppm
Hey everyone sorry for the delay in updates. Just been super busy, but wanted to put up a few pics. Im loving how everything is going. Hoping to flip to 12/12 within a few weeks. So far this system is easy street.
Been fairly busy doing some upgrades to my system to step up my game a bit.
Decided to try my hand at making some butter from the trim from last harvest, and i gotta say, im pretty damn good. Did 6 plants worth of trim, in 2 sticks of butter and GOD DAMN if it isnt an outstanding body high. Make your whole body relax and buzz in a good way.
I also decided to drop in a float switch for my RO water. Much easier, and alot better than flooding when you forget to set a timer lol. Dont ask me how i know...
My biggest improvement is a brand new sunsystems reflector, big upgrade from the cool tube. Its 95% reflective.
Right now im running my inline fan, in reverse so its blowing warm air into the tent, cause its fucking cold out. I placed a leg of panty hoes over the intake. Works great, atleast untill i can get a carbon filter, which should be soon. So this is a pic of the exhaust inside the tent, and I placed a pan with some water in it, right in front of it. Its keeping the humidity at about 40-50% (which in the winter where i live is not too shabby. Without the pan it was around 20-25% humidity.
My last three major upgrades i have my sights on are a carbon filter, CO2 tank and regulator and a new 1k watt ballast and bulb. Then ill see my system as, as close to perfect for my taste.
I did have a slight root problem a week or so ago. I noticed that the roots were looking "limp and slightly brown." Added 50ml of Aquashield and ill never run without that stuff. Cleared it right up and all the new root growth is pure white and exploding. All the white roots are new from last week. The plants themselves are looking alot more perky, vibrant and full. So its definitely doing the trick. Ill be adding 50 ml every week with nute top offs.
Nice canopy pic
I started training and tying down branches. Im using pipe cleaners, they are bendable and have a nice soft fur on it and is real gentle on the plant itself. They will also self expand and wont hinder growth. They are also perfect for cleaning your bowl hole. Ima weed mcgyver.
And a pic of our tag along pure blueberry. You can absolutely see the indica in her. MUUUUUUCH more stretch than the others. And growing very vigorously, if it wasnt tied down, shes almost 2 feet tall!
Everything is coming along quite nicely, and im looking to give em another 2 weeks or so before i flip to 12/12.
