Marigolds - To deter unwanted pest insects/bugs

I know that marigold flowers are often grown with other plants to deter infestation of pest insects. I'm going to try this with my cannabis plants.

QUESTION: Can I plant the marigolds in the same 5 gallon buckets as the cannabis plants or will the cannabis grow so large/thick that they over-shade the sun-loving marigold flowers?

5 gallons overall isn't that much. Do you really want your weed competing for root space? I personally would put the marigolds in small pots in the room. Also it seems the bottom of the pot would be overcrowded with the plants and hard to water and such.
I grew tobacco with my weed indoors this winter, and my fungus knat issue dissapeared. So marigolds may have some help, but I wouldn't try to cram multiple plants in 5 gallon pots, personally.

Another option is to lay boards running along the top edges of the buckets between the plants and place gallon buckets on top of the boards. I'd rather not do that because it makes watering and soil treatment more difficult.

Did you know that marigolds are attractive to spider mites? They are used as a trap crop to indicate the presence of spider mites. Google 'spider mites love marigolds'.

Holy crap... no, I didn't know that. I thought most unwanted insect were repelled by them. I'll research it further.

EDIT: Yep, you're right. I'll ditch the marigolds and will continue with neem oil and Mosquito Dunks.
