Mandala#1

A relatively old strain (if you think of cannabis strains in terms of dog years, ie. one human year=7 years for Cannabis), Mandala#1 was once a very popular variety about half a decade ago. Today, due to trends and hype around other lines, as well as people's yearning for potency, this connoisseur quality variety isn't as popular and will likely come up in the future as something people will want....much like strains from the 90's.

I suspect the original line released was an F2 because it was advertised as having several phenotypes to choose from. I made an F-3 selection using a pink (female) and purple phenotype (male), and from that seed batch I had one outstandingly solid, DARK PURPLE phenotype! The flavor and smell was completely different than the F2 version ( spicy, flowery bouquet...on the fresh plant, I originally thought the aroma was boring) but the high was identical, and the smoke was as smooth as it gets. The flowery flavor lingers on the tongue...despite thinking this was going to suck, it was DELICIOUS! This dark purple phenotype perhaps had the best bag appeal of any variety I've ever seen, it was lightly sprinkled with tiny amber crystals like a churro.

Anyways, with regards to the suspected F2 version, I have never tasted APPLE flavors in cannabis until I tried Mandala#1, so if you're looking for a unique taste , this is the strain for you! The smoke was smooth and never harsh, although I don't know if that has to do with how it's grown/cured or whether it's attributed to the genetics.

The yields are outstanding, but keep in mind, this is a fast flowering, early maturing plant, so it really needs to veg for a while and gain a decent size before flowering. Outdoors here in zone 9, it flowered end of September, so you don't have to worry about bud rot outdoors in most parts of the world.

Potency-wise, it's medium-strength, but it's very calming, relaxing, and enjoyable to consume, much like a warm cup of chamomile tea on a cold evening by the fire. This is a great way to wind down after a hard day of work, and you're very clear headed, so it's also good for social occasions. There's a light, relaxing body stone.

For those who grew out seeds released in 2014-2016, did you get the apple-flavor and odor in the fresh flowers? Feel free to post pics or reports! I suspect a large population of seedlings as well as careful selection is needed to stabilize that flavor in this line.

Here's Mandala#1, a purple phenotype that was acquired around 2009 from seeds:

Great yield, I think we got a little more than a pound off this plant alone:

How many of the purple phenos are you getting from ten seeds planted. Are you still getting the short green phenos or all purple. I got some of the female seeds they had of the man#1. I got three short green ones and two that were pink. None were purple. They Finished 20th Sept.

some very fine pics indeed
and excellent report, it does seem to be unique with the apple phenos

Damn you just had to mention apple flavor. Lol, now I have to try her out. Does that purple come genetically or did they need cooler temps?

I don't think I grew them all out at once, the first run we did 3 seeds total, 2 were purple or pink (a male and female) and one was green (male).

After reading about how to make rosin without solvents, these moderately potent strains with high quality highs and unique flavors excite me more than those boring one hitter quitters!

The purple is more from the genetics than environment in this case, it comes from the New Zealand indica parent plant. If you inbreed 2 purple/pink mandala#1 plants, preliminary results suggest you're going to get a high percentage of purple/pink offspring.

Purple in cannabis is a recessive gene, so you can technically cross a green phenotype with a another green phenotype and get a certain percentage of purple/pink plants. If you're going for anthocyanin production in the flowers, I'd select parent plants that are showing purple/pink in their flowers.

Anyhow, thanks everyone for the positive feedback!

I've grown M#1 several times and found a pure purple pheno, was a great plant and very reliable and resistant, grown indoor or out the colour was amazing. That said it was at the low end of the potency in that strain. There is however in the line a "grapefruit" pheno which has some purple and pink in the stem and calix, which was outstanding very high calix to leaf ratio, early ripening but somewhat bud rot prone as the buds where large and rock solid.

I grew out mandala#1 a few times and it's one of my favorites.
it's a great variety to grow in the north where there's a short season.
I was hoping to find a purple or apple one, but I didn't.
I got one that was spicy, but it was very frosted and dense with some what leafy buds. the high is very nice and relaxing without couch lock.

here's some pics of a small clone I flowered out indoors.

I grew a pk of M1 from 2008-09 and found none of the purp/pink pheno that I was hoping to find. Mine were all pretty much the same 'apple' pheno, kinda short and stout as I recall. Wasn't much on smell and taste, but really loved the nice, happy high that was common throughout the group. Didn't keep any cuts, and no F2s, all girls.

Didn't grow any more M1 until spring of last year, popped 5 and got 2 girls and 3 boys. These beans were the latest version using a more potent sativa daddy and he definitely did what was intended. I knew immediately after a little veg that these looked to me much different than the M1 I'd remembered from 2009. The new M1 girls carried thinner leaves and much more 'solvent' aroma than old version. The potency of the upgraded M1 seems much greater than before. Some people may be disappointed with the change, but most I think will like the new. I remember Mike at Mandala mentioning several years ago that he was surprised that the M1 wasn't more popular, and I think it just wasn't potent enough. I don't think that will be an issue anymore.

I popped the rest of the pk, M1 from last year and have them finishing now at about 55 days. Also ran some Krystalica freebies along with the M1s, never had the Krystalica before and didn't see good reviews from anyone, but man these things look and smell incredible. Can't wait to test smoke both these great strains from Mandala!!

M1.....plant #2

M1.....plant #4

Krystalica......plant#2

Krys........plant #2, closer

M1....#2 still seems to carry the apple smell, but has a solvent aroma going in the background. The other has a strong solvent type smell, but no 'apple'
