A relatively old strain (if you think of cannabis strains in terms of dog years, ie. one human year=7 years for Cannabis), Mandala#1 was once a very popular variety about half a decade ago. Today, due to trends and hype around other lines, as well as people's yearning for potency, this connoisseur quality variety isn't as popular and will likely come up in the future as something people will want....much like strains from the 90's.
I suspect the original line released was an F2 because it was advertised as having several phenotypes to choose from. I made an F-3 selection using a pink (female) and purple phenotype (male), and from that seed batch I had one outstandingly solid, DARK PURPLE phenotype! The flavor and smell was completely different than the F2 version ( spicy, flowery bouquet...on the fresh plant, I originally thought the aroma was boring) but the high was identical, and the smoke was as smooth as it gets. The flowery flavor lingers on the tongue...despite thinking this was going to suck, it was DELICIOUS! This dark purple phenotype perhaps had the best bag appeal of any variety I've ever seen, it was lightly sprinkled with tiny amber crystals like a churro.
Anyways, with regards to the suspected F2 version, I have never tasted APPLE flavors in cannabis until I tried Mandala#1, so if you're looking for a unique taste , this is the strain for you! The smoke was smooth and never harsh, although I don't know if that has to do with how it's grown/cured or whether it's attributed to the genetics.
The yields are outstanding, but keep in mind, this is a fast flowering, early maturing plant, so it really needs to veg for a while and gain a decent size before flowering. Outdoors here in zone 9, it flowered end of September, so you don't have to worry about bud rot outdoors in most parts of the world.
Potency-wise, it's medium-strength, but it's very calming, relaxing, and enjoyable to consume, much like a warm cup of chamomile tea on a cold evening by the fire. This is a great way to wind down after a hard day of work, and you're very clear headed, so it's also good for social occasions. There's a light, relaxing body stone.
For those who grew out seeds released in 2014-2016, did you get the apple-flavor and odor in the fresh flowers? Feel free to post pics or reports! I suspect a large population of seedlings as well as careful selection is needed to stabilize that flavor in this line.
Here's Mandala#1, a purple phenotype that was acquired around 2009 from seeds:
Great yield, I think we got a little more than a pound off this plant alone:
