Male Pollen from preflowers?

Hi IC, my partner is holding on to six males at the moment from a large seed pop. Some of the males seem to be opening some flowers while others are starting to form clusters but have not opened. How concerned should we be about accidental pollination of the females? The females are in green houses and tarps are going to start being pulled next week. Is the male pollen viable? Or does it need a proper 12/12 cycle to be fertile? Most of the males are sour tangie. Any advice for the novice breeder who is not trying to pollinate would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

We're definitely taking precautions. However, maybe a better question would be has anyone collected pollen from opened flowers under a 18/6 and used them to pollinate plants successfully?

I haven't collected pollen from male preflowers but have made seeds from female preflowers. I would think the same principles would apply regarding the meiotic processes and pollination/fertilization.

Hola Epiphyte,

The pollen from preflowers is 100% viable and is not dependent on photoperiod, as photoperiod is only one possible trigger for flower production. Many tropical sativas are triggered into flowering, both male and female, by plant maturity since there is very little photoperiod variation as you approach the equator.

If you do not want seeded females then you need to isolate the males pronto.

RC is right on, I find sometimes you really cant get a male to stop putting out a bit of pollen on preflowers even after many months on 18/6. You gottta keep em separate....like that Offspring song.

I have a male I saved from my outdoor run last year. It was cloned and moved to my veg cab (on 18/6) around September. It was still gushing pollen by the end of the year, so I changed the light cycle to 24/0, and it only just seems to be slowing down a little since last month.

Other males are still also heavily pre-flowering, but not as full-on as that one male.

I thought I was the only one....

Thanks for the replys, guys. They males are separated but Im worried about pollen traveling on clothes and the sort. But I think everything is pretty clear now.

Mist yourself with a spray bottle of water after working in the male area. That will kill any pollen on your clothes.
