Male pollen access/collections.

The farther and more I start to do my own open growing with larger numbers of cultivars especially lines that I'd like to just keep in allowed to pollinate I'm starting to realize that I know nothing about what to look for.Or what to see traits wise in younger plants that are male and how to go about learning about said mail traits what to look for all of that and maybe people that actually have been holding on to it and experimenting with said Pollen and I'd love to touch base and learn more about if anybody has any insight or help that be great thank you

My Elder that I learned all of this there was trying to learn all of this from passed away in 2018 and back then I wasn't trying to even remotely focus on realizing that I could provide my own family and my small circle of area and my growing friends with phenomenal lines I just had to put the work in myself and dedicate an area and how many of months years it took to find the lines to start to develop I didn't realize.
I'm kind of shocked that no one has come up with like a craft male like a Shiva here said getting a male that you know is really really nice and has all the traits you look for and keeping him alive and having access to cloner two of that mail and like you said I need to learn along with whomever else is interested in this and how to collect store and keep it going so that we can all share boy would it be nice to have like an icy mag pollen bank for all of us members to utilize and share with one another

Craft males aren't something that a breeder should pursue, in my opinion. You just need to identify bad males...what if they dont have good lower branch growth, they're like little tyrannosaurus rex arms you know what i mean? We kill those males off. Next is leaf structure if you know what ur after. This won't make much sense to people that haven't grown alot of a similar strain or tried to isolate a trait, but you start to see what juvenile leaves should look like if it is a pheno you want. Just like our fems, we see early variation in veg structure. Well if ur a breeder on f2's going for a particular pheno, you dont waste effort on the 1 phenos expressing in the...9:3:3:1 phenotypic ratio that is the classic Mendelian ratio for a dihybrid cross. You just grab the ones you need if ur trying to stabilize a pheno.
All that said, you dont make craft males...you scrap the sickly males, you collect all upper middle class males of the f1's, f2's, etc. I make no claims on methodology using said pollen in your breeding goals or programs.

I should go back and edit that because I didn't mean to write Kraft males I was speaking into the microphone and picked up vernacular from all of these advertisements that are going around locally that everything's craft so I apologize for that I'll fix that now.
So if you have a male identified in your garden how far do you let him go to see what you're looking for you immediately isolate him and let him grow in a different area? I wouldn't have the faintest idea what traits make a male appealing because anytime I see a patch Outdoors that's left to its own devices so to speak the males that I've seen tend to be like one or two that are just as tall as the taller female phenotypes and they're not as prevalent as the females the one fields that I saw some of which were hemp the males that were alive were very tall and you could you know they stood out they're like a big column structure-wise and I do realize that if I remember right from being on the farm that Paul and can travel what 5 MI so I guess I'm just trying to understand indoors and learn from you guys so that I can start doing this and doing it right

I go through lots of males annually and can give some insight but for starters is learning to collect, dry, and store the stuff.
Can you isolate a branch use a paintbrush to pollinate whatever buds you want pollinated and then cover them with a bag a clear translucent bag or whatever until the pollen is caught into the pistols and stamens would that work?

Obviously I'd like to discuss this in the thread so that the community can learn or any of those in the community that didn't have a scope of understanding on this like I did so they could broaden their understanding would be great but I may if it's okay message you in the near future if I have issues or I need a finer tuned response for example like are everyone that has their own program for lack of a better analogy or vernacular going did they look for different things in males so am I going to you know what I mean like I'm just trying to understand all the nuances that are the male plant and what you look for and all of that so I apologize if I'm asking questions that seem redundant

I've been growing since the early 70's ... or the mid 70's ... or the early 80's ... depending on how you count.

I didn't have access to a whole bunch of reading material 45 years ago.

Generally the impression I have is that Pollen is mostly, highly perishable.

It would be great to see some research & to hear other people's experience.

I wouldn't be surprised if, with the right treatment, some pollen can remain viable for a year or more, if frozen, dried correctly before freezing, etc.
