Male Breeding Experiment Gone Awry!!!

Well not really. I've been growing my last Bog beans out lately, and since they are an exdangered species I figured that I would save a male, collect some pollen, and well you guys know the rest.

O.K. a few days ago I seperated my male from my females and put him under his own 65 watt CFL in his own box...and look what is happening.

Let me just state that this male was watered exactly the same with the exact same nutes as my females...the females are doing great. This male was doing great until I moved him.

Can it be the decrease in light? He was moved from 250MH to 65CFL.

I am growing in soil. FFOF. I put in extra chunky perlite and some dolomite. FF line of liquid nutes.

Thanks Guys.

Overwatered? Because the soil dries up faster with 250 MH than with 65 CFL above it? lol just guessing

I thought about that actually. It could be, I guess, but my moisture meter shows that it is midway moist.

There is no air circulation where I have him, but I am only using a 65CFL and it isn't very hot. Also the space he is in is far far far from airtight, so it cant be totally CO2 starved either.

I'm fairly stumped.

I'm going to take a stab at it and say it was the decrease in light. Going from 250w MH to 65w CFL is a big drop in lumens. But really, I don't know.

I swear your plant looks identical to mine when it was overwatered...

Sounds like a combo problem, its a pretty sure bet that all three, the decrease in light, soil dampness and most definitly the stale air, would cause at least your problem. Your plant took at a double whammy. Im thinking he was enjoyin hiself in there, chillen with the ladies, bein a self rightous pimp when all of a sudden you gotta come in there cock blockin his MJ mojo. Stripped of his sun and bitches, you darkened his day. Show him some love, give him a breeze of fresh air and some more light and he'll come back. He's a savage. If i couldnt help, maybe i entertained slightly. keep it easy ~caddy

The top leaves are getting "claw" leaves which usually indicates too much fertilizer especially nitrogen.

He definately looks like he's over-watered and the reduction in light wouldn't help that at all.

That being said I've moved a few males from a 600W HPS to a 30W CFL with no problems at all.

You really have to let him dry out really good before watering again. I'd use plain water from now on there's really no need to fert anymore if you're only growing him for the pollen.

Here's a couple of my BOG girls- Lifesaver @ 36 days of 12/12

O.K. Here is my update.

I added a small exhaust fan and now temps are perfect and there is air circ.

I haven't added any more light.

I haven't watered and my moisture meter is still reading medium moist.

The plant looks even worse. It is drooping and the stems are getting weak. I don't think that it is a light problem anymore.

If it is a nitrogen overdose, overwatering to flush probably won't help it as this juncture.

Anyone have any ideas?

take him out of the pot and check his roots and the soil is still healthy.

I would throw it back in with the girls as he is not that close to dropping pollen. Just to see if it helps.
As soon as any balls start to sag except maybe yours hehe.. get him out. You can then cut the top off and place stem in small container of water and let the flowers hang over some glass so they can open. You could also try to use the cfl again.

But HELL NAW!!!! :noway:

Dont put that summa bytch back around dem gals!!!
It only takes one male preflower or an overlooked male flower to make you a very unhappy grower.

OK. Thanks again guys...

I'm going to check the soil...check for rootbound issues(even though I think this is not the problem.)

How far along do the male sacks have to be before I can just take cuttings and toss the rest of the plant?

I ewill post a new pic soon.

I was more worried about the lower soil rotting and taking the roots with it Ben. I've had it happen on a cactus i overwatered. I've played with teh cut in the water and not had any success with it. Personally I'd just lst the male over some magazines and collect that way.

Well if you REALLy are worried that the plant will die, I did this before but wouldn't recommend it honestly because you can kill it completely this way.....

I carefully took out the plant and soil and then washed the roots with water, for then to put it back into the container in fresh soil. Believe it or not but with the plants I did this they revived...

edit: I'm not recommending this but if you think it's the LAST thing you can do, go for it...It saved my plants that's what I know

Sorry it took me so long to update this...another of my tragic threads.

I was forced due to a family emergency to go away for a week. When I returned one of the males was dead, but where it had drooped over was a little healthy highlighter yellow colored pollen. So I collected that.

The plant in front, the one I was initially trying to save...still looks like shit. It is not dropping viable pollen. It keeps shaking off full sacks.

I dont mind as long as I got some pollen. Again thanks for the input guys.

Hey, to anyone still lurking.

How long does it take seeds to become mature on the bud. I have a few nice looking seed-pods forming.
