Malawi Gold

Durban Poison is very variable and comes from ~ 30 lattitude which means not so high THC / CBD ratio - like north Mexicans or north Africans - givin'u more buzzy and dull high...There's a difference between fine Malawi (~15 latt.- like Jamaican or central Mexicans) and south African strains Durban on Swazi which can range from sativa to indica type plants like Marrocans..

Like the dude who posted just above,
i have similar question for you guys:
would you know which out of seedsman or afropips Malawi Gold would do better indoors in terms of grow/smoke ???

Hey rebel_444, and all others,

never grown the afropips Malawi myself, but checked out a grow/smoke report today on hg 420 forums in the afropips breeder forum, the grow seemed ok, but the smoke according to this dude (and all this guy's friends) tasted really nasty, like charcoal, rubber...
and the high was described as short lasting barely noticeable after 6 bowls,
quote from there:
"Potency/High - for most testers...."did I smoke something or was that oregano"
Even afroman over there wasn't contesting the poor quality bud resulting from the grow, he just said it had very high light requirements, and anyway that MG was an outdoor variety meant for a tropical climate, and that it would be the only way to achieve a potent, "psychedelic" product
IMO a tropical climate may give better bud, but good quality genetics should yield something decent indoors nevertheless.
In short, the bud was very disapointing...

After reading this, I'd say it would be safer to go for the seedsman
Malawi Gold, which is probably what I'll do in the future when I'll be able to grow again (waiting for this is painful!)
or check out that guawi from ACE sometime in the future (though different Malawi genetics/high to the Malawi GOLD), should be awesome though,
I'd personally grow both :)

I invite anyone with further experiences/info with any of these seeds to
share their knowledge with us,
cheers,

Ganjabro

yeah, Elevator man seemed to have a great experience with his malawi gold... I think it was seedsman... I'm unsure what stock seedsman has... from African seeds or Afropips?

also, from what I've heard of afropips he does not make me feel confident in his genetics...

Yeah, but that member only grew out 2 seeds....

Nice thread!

again, I have grown Malawi 99 which was great, (potent enough even though I had to cut early, with a very trippy visual high). I am currently growing a Malawi seedsman.

Malawi must be flowered in my opinion under and Metal Halide bulb to get a better sense of its potency /high. The early cut Malawi 99 for example was under a blue Metal Halid (not even a warm). I think this is true for many sativas , tthey should get high energy UV light during veg AS WELL AS flowering time. Yield may be lower, but again you should get better potency, density, and maybe most importantly less stretch. Hardcore LST is a must. All worth it in the end IMO.

The malawi gold from seedsman has good feedback, and seems to be a real deal, decent price.
Pescador, let us know how it turns out grow/smoke wise, I am interested.
Cheers,

Ganjabro

Seedsmans malawi (originally from african seeds so i've heard)does alot better when force flowered outdoors,it brings out a sweet lemon sherbert smell and flavour .Indoors she's ok but nothing to right home about but crossing it to my non dom chronic male has made it alot better for growing indoors while retaining the sweet lemon sherbert flavour.

i'll keep you informed tafari. i have two malonica's going right now. one is vigorous and with excellent smells when the stem is rubbed. the other is a little slower and similar but softer smells. i'm excited about both!!!

I grow Malawi all the time at the emerald triangle. The plant is very adaptable to less than equitorial climates and is quite vigorous here at the 39th. When someone writes about how poor the high is and it doesn't last long the problem is usually the result of improper curing.

Ideally you want to grow Malawi outdoors/greenhouse and harvest late November and maybe into December if you can keep her dry. If height is a challenge, for security or other reasons, then get your females vegging in March and when the plants are huge in June take clipping, root them and get outside as soon as possible. You will have a field of 3 to 4 ft single cola plants that yield well. When they get close to harvest time the fan leaves turn gold and most fall off. There is very little trimming you need to do. The buds will be airy, sticky and have very little oder, but what is present is very pleasant. The lack of oder is a very nice feature, especially growing outside. However when you chop and hang it will give off a skunk smell that is detectable. For a shorter flowering period get a Malawi x C99 and that has almost no oder as well.

Curing is a major phase of production leading to the final smokable product. The best wines in the world are aged (cured) with the same care. I've had buddies throw away a grow because after a month the high wasn't strong and didn't last long. They give me some and I cured it properly. When they smoked it after it was “ready” they were kicking themselves in the ass. If you really want the superior Malawi high you have to be ready to pay the price of the curing time. At a minimum you need to wait 3 months! My buds get put away for 6 months in my climate controlled curing cabinet while I smoke other stuff.

The high is unique. You can check in and out of being high in the same way you snap in and out of daydreaming. It is speedy but when overdone it is very racy and way too much give you paranoia. Just a couple hits is fine to get me through 2 to 3 hours with no crash. It just fades away as if it never happened.

The Malawi I use is from Afropips but I suspect any legitimate seed company will do you good.

great post Dr Leary!!!

wow. at least 3 months. do you have any suggestions as to what i can store curing buds in besides sealed jars? something that isn't too elaborate or expensive i hope.
also, i don't have a climate controlled room or box. would a cool dark closet/garage/basement be sufficient?

i have also flowered a malawi from Afropips (RIP) for 14 weeks from seed, not long enough i know, but still she was awesome even with one month cure only. I'm very excited with the clone that i am flowering right now, this time there will be no mistakes, at least 18 weeks under MH lights and enough indicas to keep me going through a proper cure :joint:

Brastaman, I suggest 3 months minimum but if i have enough self control i dont go at it for 6 months. If you can get to that point first time then treat yourself to a pinner at about an hour before sunset outside at some peaceful location. This is my personal stash so time and money have no limits. I always grow other strains so i can keep myself distracted. It's the same as curing your other stash just LOOOOONGER. This year Im exploring two differnt curing techniques some guys in the African thread gave me info on. I have also been looking into trying Ethylene gas that is used to ripen fruit to use while my bud is drying.

My brain loves the pure sativas and I have made a lot of costly mistakes trying to get some nice sativa bud in my hands. I would have to say the Malawi is the most forgiving of all lthe sativas I have worked with for this climate zone. I want to get my hands on some of ACE's stuff. I just drool over the photos of the pencil sized leaves of his genetics.
