Malagasy landraces and cultivated species?

M

Hey guys, just curious if anyone has some info from strains in Madagascar, specifically in the tropical highlands.

Seems like there's some wild species too but the cultivated probably has a diverse background like Indian and African, etc.

Trying to get more info from a friend who visits there and has family, apparently the bud is really nice though.

Hi' :)
Sure a best stuff!

It is the magic country origins of Zamal from the French island La Reunion.
"Zamala" is the old Malagasy spoken... Now they say rather "Rongony".

Fields are from the south of the island i think' ... tsangatsangana ;)

We agree Randy, it reminds the mix between Thai/India and Africa...

But probably Indonesian origin? From the Austronesian old migration i mean. (?)

I have only seen one Indonesian strain but it seems different. They are usually more like the weed in the video below. But there must be more strains there, not only a few closely related strains.

@roms sadly the seeds from Gypsy didn’t sprout I tried to get them going back in 2011. I been searching through the Mauritius genes though.

Good luck with your Mauritius opportunity Purple Clouds, by the chance to find something old and pure! Also let's hope that we will have in our hands some good Mada seeds in parallel to cross them all together with Zamal... A kind of Austronesian revival vibe project to the future!

The comparison with the Mozambique, Swazi and Malawi is something interesting to study too. The old South African magic power poison recipe!

@Ahortator, thanks for the link, the plants in that Indonesian video are pretty young, i think it also depends on planting periods etc but the genetics must certainly enjoy differently the Madagascar sun and less humidity highlands... (?) ;)
