making a cab...

I am in the process of building a cab. I am aquiring stuff slow but sure, and am in no hurry. Sofar I have aquired an old 2 door wardrobe & painted it flat white inside( LWH of space is 30"x 19"x 54"). I Also have a remote ballast 400 HPS.

I am getting to the point of looking into ventilation/odor control, and have checked out a few scrubbers/fans, and combo units. I am unsure approx. how much airflow I'll need to keep temps under control. The cheapest was a combo unit - 4lb, 150 sq. in SA filter, w/a 110 cfm AC fan, advertised at 60 real cfm after going thru the filter, and perfect for cabs/closets.

If I did the math right, I have a tad under 18 CF of space, so this should change the air 3x/min, right? I am planning on bottom passive intakes, and exhausting w/this out the top, right above the lamp. Would this keep it cool enough, or will I need the next larger model (7lb, 350 cfm, 150 after passing thru filter)

I'm hoping the small one would be enough, as the larger one is significantly more $. Like mentioned at the start, there is no rush to complete it, lots of time to ask questions to make sure I spend my $ on adequate gear... :rasta:

Peace

It might work to cool a 250 watt light, a 400 will be tricky. If you made a cool tube it should work.

Thanx, I have not bought yet, I may get the larger one then. just what I wanted to know.

Thanx.

Peace

Edit: went & got the stats for the larger unit. 16"L x 10" dia. 7 lb carbon, 350 cfm fan. (150 real cfm after going thru filter)

Better? IDK, space is an issue...

One baby step at a time...

One baby step at a time...

Well, I think I'll try the smaller one first, as it is much less expensive... if it's not enough, a second could be added for the same cost as 1 larger space-hogging unit. Here's advertised stats for it, I have 18 sq. ft. It's a standalone type filter, goes inside cab, vents out into room (no ducting). Passive intakes @ bottom will be used.

Just want it to work out well - as in my title, I am an outdoor joe and a very K.I.S.S. type of guy. My indoor exp. is limited to starts/moms/clones w/ CFL's. I guess time will tell once I get the filter/ install it / complete construction, and fire up the light to test it. No hurry, still have things to aquire and work to be done (layout, hole drilling + final construction, lightproofing, etc)

--------------
Filter Details + Description...

As a general rule, you should size your filter to cycle the entire volume of your room every 3-10 minutes. This filter uses a 110 cfm fan, but is approx 60 TrueCFM (after mounting to filter). The shorter the time required to cycle the room volume, the more effective the filter will be.

Example 1: 2'x4' cabinet with 6' height. 2x4x6 = 48 cubic feet. 48 / 60 = < 1 minute to cycle cabinet volume. EXTREMELY EFFECTIVE

Example 2: 9'x5' room with 8' ceiling. 9x5x8 = 360 cubic feet. 360 / 60 = 6 minutes to cycle room volume. VERY EFFECTIVE

Example 3: 10'x8' room with 8' ceiling. 10x8x8 = cubic feet. 640 / 60 = ~10.5 minutes to cycle room volume. FAIRLY EFFECTIVE

Features:

4lbs CTC-80 Activated Carbon from real coal (not the cheap coconut stuff)

Powerful AC Fan

Intake surface area size increased by 2000% to over 150 square inches!

Can hang or set on surface

Easy refill to save money over the long run

Fast Shipping

NEW - Replaceable Pre-Filter to extend the life of your carbon

12-24 months of typical usage before requiring refill

20" Long

Includes 5 foot power cord

---------------

I am considering hanging this @ the top rear of the cab (30" side), w/ bungees/screw-in hooks and venting straight out the side (right behind the hanger bar). Another could be added beside it if necessary to move more air if temps are still too high. I feel a larger dia. unit would just hog too much space inside.

Cool tube could be an option, but I'm having difficulty figuring out how to convert my batwing setup to a CT, using the 5" lampglass in the pic. Maybe an open-ended design? But I'll try it out w/ just the batwing first to see if it stays cool enough. I'd prefer having to buy a 2nd filter/fan unit to trying to figure out the CT thing, and having to use space-hogging ducting in an already small space.

Doesn't look like much ATM, just a light, screen & a lampglass stored in a painted cab to keep the dust off while I wait to complete it. But I will update as it progresses. (need all components handy before layout/drilling etc)

But it's gonna take awhile to complete. Components cost $$ and take time to arrive after all...

Hoping it all works out in the end, posted the pic of "stuff I've aquired sofar" just for the halibut...

It's def. worth a good ol' college try, it sure beats the heck outta paying for smoke! :rasta:

Peace

Coming along...

Coming along...

Well, my scrubber/fan came yesterday, got the larger one (7lb, 10x18", 350 CFM/150 RCFM after filter) and I installed it today "chimney style". Twas the only option, woulda took up too much space inside. Just gave 'er a 2-3 hour test run w/lights on, doors closed. Temps hovered between 75 and 77F.

Sounds about right to me, at least it's built and ready to go...well, after some nasty light leaks are sealed with weatherstripping or similar. I had sealed most cracks with grey duct tape, but the 400 just shines right thru it like it wasn't even there.

Cab is obviously not a stealthy layout w/ that big ol' chimney on top, it is just a growspace (flower) to be kept outta sight in the cellar, where intake air is nice and cool year round. Not the prettiest, but oughtta do the trick tho... :rasta:

Peace
