Mag drive pump failures

Hey guys been playing with the mag drive pumps and i noticed something... They seem to run fine if your have the on 24/7 but if you hook them up to a cycle timer 30 seconds on, 5 minutes off, they fail within a day or two.

This has happened on 2 pumps in a row now.

Anyone else notice this happen??

Trying to use my aero cloner for vegging a week, have to use a cycle timer as my set up runs to hot for veg, but perfect for cloning. (75 deg)

Any advice?? alternate pumps???

thanks

I have been running Pondmaster mag drive pumps for about a year w/o issue. Not in an aero setup with the constant on/off though. I had one failure which busted the plastic, I think a rock got in there.

Have you contacted the pump manufacturer?

I know quite a few people use their ez-cloners on a cycle timer for cloning and vegging w/o issue.

I noticed when I had a MagDrive pump outside the res, the pump will not suck up any water if the inlet tube is not angled downward so that the tube fills itself through gravity. I had to stick another small pump into the Mag intake tube and "prime" the pump. I think if you set up the Mag so the intake tube is always full of water even with the pump off, it will start with a timer.

I've got mine on a periodic timer set for 5 minutes on, 15 minutes off. The pump is sitting in the bottom of my reservoir, though, so it doesn't need to be primed. Can you move the pump?

I've seen self-priming pumps for other applications, but they're very expensive.

I've used them for years. I have one running outdoors that been growing for over 7 yeatrs. As for magnetic drive pumps, it's a bad habit to turn them off and on constantly. The only friction with a mag drive style pump is during startup. They last alot longer if you let them run constantly.

Hey Howdy Chosen! Dose that include big pumps like EcoPluses? If so, do they tend to get too hot when run constantly? I never ran one constantly but it shure sounds interestin. I always thought it would get too hot.
