Macro shots

I just got a fancy new Nikon D-50 with a 18-55 lens. Unfortunately I still can't get good macro bud shots.

How do you do it? Overgrow used to have some Photography FAQs, but obviously that resource is gone now.

I'd like to get some extreme closeups of my trichs. Any suggestions?

(BTW - I tried the search function before asking. I couldn't find any posts that talked about macro techniques. IMHO this info should be in a FAQ or Sticky)

do what the directions say. usually cameras have a 'macro mode' button so you'll have to find that. then find out how close you can put your lense up to the thing you are taking a picture of. then once you get that down you can start to fool around with aperature and shutter

Thanks. I have been experimenting with the Macro mode, but so far haven't gotten in quite as close as I'd like. I vaguely remember reading something about shooting through a large magnifying glass to get those photo-micrography shots. I will keep tinkering with the macro feature. Maybe a tripod will help

I'd like to be able to zoom in like this (pic was posted by Verite)

I think you're right...I think a Macro lens is probably the way to go. Quantaray makes a relatively inexpensive one - 500mm f/8.0 Mirror w/Macro sells for $129. Maybe I will bite the bullet and get one, but until then I will keep tinkering with my 18-55. Any tips on how to get closer using this lens would be much appreciated.

Welll we busted out the 24-70L lens and its got a really good macro view on it just not magnified so ordered some close up rings..
77mm HOYa close up lenses..79.99.. it comes with 3 lenses,,+1,+2,+4.
the macro lense i want is 400$..canon 100mm 2.8 macro lense.
so 100$ right know and if that dont cut it then well bite the bullet!

Canon 20D with lots of lenses just no macro lense!
