Mac vs. PC - the great debate

1

Macs crash. Macs get viruses. Macs get hacked.

You're comparing Macs and PCs by saying things install faster? :jerkit: If PCs don't function, then how the hell have I been using a computer for the past 10 years?

That's not a fact. That's an opinion.

Seriously?

Looks better = Opinion, and nothing more

Feel better = WTF does that mean? I just rubbed my PC and it felt nice. :dunno:

Run smoother and faster = Smoother and faster than what? I can almost guarantee my PC will run smoother and faster than your Mac. But either way, that's a ridiculous statement. There are tons of different Macs, and there are tons of different PCs.

Greater ease of use = Opinion

I've used PCs for 15 years. I've used Macs too. I've used PCs that I've built myself for the past 6 years. I've never had anti virus programs, and guess what? I've never had a virus! If you take some basic preventative measures you've got nothing to worry about with viruses, but don't go around making ignorant statements like this.

You're acting like you're talking about facts, but really, these are all pretty fanboyish comparisons.

LMAO name calling?

wow you got issues bro!!

Also thanks for the negitive rating lmao you were the only person to send one :) but i did get 4 positive ratings
Guess you dont grasp the concept of debate.

whats your point? your entire post was opinion based and we arnt talking about home built machines in this thread anyway! So what are you doing here??

Also they dont get hacked lol apple has had a open reward for the past 25 years or so for anyone who can hack one lol

ive never even turned mine off in the 4 years ive owned it and it is as fast as it was on day one. bet you cant say that for a PC

LMAO dude the only reason anyone even makes antivirus for mac is because it runs windows LMAO

Namecalling? What are you talking about? I did not find your post helpful, so I rated it that way, are you really going to cry about it? Since when is a home built machine not a PC?

Apples can be hacked. FACT.
Apples can get viruses. FACT.
On for four years and as fast as day one? That's bullshit, and unless you've got some actual tests, and can take a screenshot of your uptime, then it's nothing but bullshit.

You're talking out of your ass.

Being a pre-press operator for my whole life I can honestly say that Mac is better for the printing industry. We have both and there are more problems and work-arounds using a pc. But for home use, surfing and document creating, there's virtually no difference. Sure you may have to re-boot more with a pc but once you are using an program there is very little difference.

i like and use both macs and pcs at home and at work

i support about 65 macs at work, 100 or so pcs

they both have their strong points, and both can have their own quirks and weirdness as well, of course windows is more prone to malware and virii so i have to pay more attention to those than the macs, but i like them all the same

for pcs, i love windows active directory and group policy, saves me a ton of time, loving windows server update services too

for macs, love that it's unix underneath, makes it easy to write scripts to carry out tasks for me, the remote desktop management software is cool but kind of quirky

the home usage stuff, really i don't care too much as long as i have firefox, windows linux mac osx freebsd unix, whatever, most home things happen in firefox...i do use 1 mac for music hobby stuff, osx running ableton live

I use a macbook pro as my only computer. i use osx for my personal computer, i virtually run windows xp pro for work, virtually run linux for some coding, and i bootcamp windows 7 for gaming.

While there have been many great points made here, the best thing mac's have going for them are their ascetics and the way the OS is based. firstly, i use a program called carbon copy cloner that takes a .iso image of my entire hard drive (aka clones it) each and every evening to a 2.5" laptop drove mounted inside an external hard drive inclosure.

this has two great options... 1) if there is ever a hard drive failure, i can literally hotswap my hard drive with the external clone, and nothing has ever happened. downtime, 10 minutes, if you struggle with screws.
2) if either of my windows installs ever happen to crash or corrupt themselves (which they do tend to do more than macs) i can simply delete it and reintall the OS back virtually. downtime, however long it takes to install said version of windows. no files are lost, as they are copied to a shared folder on os x.

and i use the absolute shit out of this computer, each and every day. i dual run windows and mac at work, each one on a separate monitor, i actually have the exact same programs on both operating systems (for work purposes i.e. adobe cs4, office, etc) because i like the slightly different functionalities / quirks that they offer.

at the end of the day, mac saves me time. which saves me money. even though i run windows all day on my mac. haha.

I'm curious as to why people are using Mac and Linux specifically for programming. I've used all 3 mainstream OS's for software development and have found Windows to be the best development environment.

well no doubt bro

I can also buy generic food and eat twice as many days on the same $20.00

I dont eat generic food and I dont run a PC for the same reason basiacly

But all you have done is proved that more machine is faster that goes without saying lol

Now match equal Pc and MAC and the MAC will blow it out of the water

there is no argument to that statement.

You missed my point there. Match an equally priced PC and Mac, and the PC will vastly outperform the Mac in all areas. And I've found that XP is much faster than any operating system Apple has produced; even on equal hardware, and far less restricted. People seem to be liking the Apple OS more for it's resistance against incompetence more than anything. Why pay more?

I've had several PC users come an stay here in my home for a bit.
Without fail every single PC user who spent time here on one of my macs, bought their next computer from apple. It is as simple as that. Spent two weeks using one and were sold on them. It is all personal preference, I guess, I just prefer stuff that works.

According to the benchmarking Apple Computers are faster. According to my experience they're more reliable.

This compares a $1500 mac desktop to a $1800 PC desktop, and a $1299 apple laptop to a $1299 PC laptop.

The Verdict: Apple
Mac: In both the laptop and desktop showdowns, Apple’s computers were the winners. Oddly, the big difference didn’t come in our user ratings, where we expected the famously friendly Mac interface to shine. Our respondents liked the look and feel of both operating systems but had a slight preference toward OS X. In our speed trials, however, Leopard OS trounced Vista in all-important tasks such as boot-up, shutdown and program-launch times. We even tested Vista on the Macs using Apple’s platform-switching Boot Camp software—and found that both Apple computers ran Vista faster than our PCs did.

PC: Simply put, Vista proved to be a more sluggish operating system than Leopard. Our PCs installed some software faster, but in general they were slower in our time trials. Plus, both PCs showed weaker performance on third-party benchmarks than the Macs. Our biggest surprise, however, was that PCs were not the relative bargains we expected them to be. The Asus M51sr costs the same as a MacBook, while the Gateway One actually costs $300 more than an iMac. That means for the price of the Gateway you could buy an iMac, boost its hard drive to match the Gateway’s, purchase a copy of Vista to boot—and still save $100.

no

lets see does mac crash NO

Yes it does.

does mac go blue screen NO

No, but bluescreen is another word for bugging and so does the mac.

does mac get virus NO

Yes, like "The Opener" and many others.

does mac get hacked NO

Yes like any other hardware connected to the internet or other means of communication. Hack usually means your exploiting errors in the software or by preinstalling remote programs.

Did Microsoft steal appels OS yes and they always have and do and always will when ever apple puts out new product.

And who was first when it comes to layout of this generation of interfaces we use? I believe it was neither microsoft nor apple. Amiga perhaps? I dont really know but the point is the layouts and interfaces we use today on both mac and pc's are derivatives of the evolution of the OS.

Which is better???

By following simple logic the pc is the best without a doubt, not only does it cost a fraction but it also comes in all buildable sizes and shapes. However when it comes to a finished product layout sweetness i would have to go with mac but it comes far short of achieving the gold medal as the price is insane and the people making it are even more crazy. Also the sheer number of pc's out there makes the options of software, games, programs etc endless. And why even buy a mac, its just a pc with another os at a pimped out price.

It's no question. If you have never owned a mac then you have no opinion.

Have you ever owned a good, high end, stationary pc?

lol, arguing over opinion is priceless as always.

I've been using windows since 3.1.1. and prefer windows.
I used a Mac for 5 years at my old job for artwork. I never liked it, period.

Having used both Mac and Windows for artwork and recording I can tell you that the whole "Mac is better", for art and music angle is complete BS. Both get the job done, it is the end user that makes it all happen.

I love the superiority complex that lots of Mac users have, lol.

I love the way that 3rd party benchmark test demonstrate Apple's superiority, as verified by independent unbiased tests. Numbers rarely lie, and recognizing the facts does not indicate a superiority complex. Some people may actually prefer the way windows software works together so seamlessly and without issue, and I say ultimately buy what you like... I'll buy whatever is better at the time, it is just hard to imagine apple ever falling behind.

I enjoy being able to switch from a high end mac, to a high end PC and back again just by rebooting into boot camp.

Running parallels or vmware fusion you can run windows inside of mac OSX and drag and drop files from one OS to the other...

That doesn't surprise me at all with Windows Vista. That operating system was way too bulky and horrible, and almost as restrictive as OS X. If they had XP on the machine, or even Windows 7, I think the results would have been much different. My machine takes about 20 seconds to boot now with Windows 7, compared to around a minute with Vista.

They seem to have chosen a rather strange PC for that test though. I assume it's because that PC matches the physical dimensions and styling of the Macintosh. I'm comparing prices of similar hardware set-ups now, and the Windows-based machines are still significantly cheaper in almost all cases.

--------------------------------------
Apple Imac:

21.5-inch

3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

1920 x 1080 resolution

4GB memory

500GB hard drive

8x double-layer SuperDrive

NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics card

£969.00
--------------------------------------

That's the same processor as I have, the same RAM, a slightly smaller hard drive, a smaller (by only half an inch), though equally high-quality monitor, a vastly inferior graphics card (mine is an over-clocked 8800GTX, that Mac uses a laptop GPU), and a moderately inferior disc drive, and for over £100 more than I paid for this set-up over 2 years ago.

And I also own an Imac (I got a deal on it a few years back) and after reinstalling the operating system 3 times due to some really weird behaviour, it's now collecting dust. My first ever computer was also an Imac. Recently I've used other Imacs and even a £3000 Mac Pro and I can honestly say that the only area in which Apple surpasses Windows-based PCs in is their aesthetic appeal. In all other areas (price, reliability, convenience, compatibility, user customizability, etc.), Windows is superior. However, a large factor to take into account is the user themselves. An operating system such as OS X restricts the user far more than Windows does, meaning there's less room for screwing up and messing with the machine. And increased customisability inevitably means there's more potential for things to go wrong.

Mac OSx vs Windows 7 via CNet

Windows 7 does seem to be a big improvement over Vista. There are a couple of test where it actually did outperform the apple.

Maybe I'll install windows 7 on my mac via bootcamp and give her a test run. I removed the vista partition a couple of months after installing it due to never using it.

You rest my case... you need benchmarks to tell you what is "better". Without the benchmark 99 times out of a hundred you won't notice the difference. Use what you like, that is all that matters.

I can tell you that I've recorded DVD-Audio on both systems and there is no difference in the end product. I don't need a benchmark to make a point.

I do not need benchmarks, they simply validate my experience in a quantitative manner. I much prefer mac, and used PC exclusively for a decade before switching. If the end product is similar and my machine gives me fewer issues and a more pleasant experience... and I can run BOTH OSs simultaneously... Why would I want a PC? The price difference is negligible.

The problem with benchmarks is that they are flawed when it comes to computers. Macs are Macs but windows boxes are sooooooo varied its not even funny. You can benchmark a Mac against 5 windows machines that look the same inside but perform very differently.

You can say you have a personal preference but saying one is better than the other and stating that as fact is plain silly. Benchmarks... lol.
