Mac/*nux Tor users: speed, security and ICmag

Hey,

Just a FYI, the most recent Tor Browser Bundles for Mac and Linux (and soon Windows) no longer need/contain the proxy Polipo (or Privoxy). The reason is a bit obscure, it has to due to with timeouts and SOCKS proxy in Firefox and a very old patch. Anyway, the result is a faster and more secure browsing experience with Tor Browser Bundel.

The reason I wrote this here is many people using Tor with Polipo get errors at ICmag when trying to post images, uploaded files, etc., when using SSL. That issue is a bug in Polipo. Before I wrote how to use Privoxy for Windows and Mac, etc., but not using _any_ proxy is better than using a working proxy.

So what this means is Mac and *nix, etc., users of Tor can/should now use the current Tor Browser Bundle (with a forked Firefox 4).

Also, for those who do not use Tor Browser Bundle, but do use Tor, you should start using Tor Browser Bundle. Tor has no forked Firefox to apply fixes to bugs long standing in Firefox. The Tor Project is moving away from support for non-Tor Browser Bundles, ex., TorButton (the critical must have for Tor and web surfing) will soon only be available via Tor Browser.
