Hey Mybeans420, i presume that the M stands for macro. This facility allows you to take larger that life pictures of your subject
(extreme closeups).I have found that a lot of digital cameras these days have pretty decent macro settings although a lot do not use an "M". If your coolpix has a setting that looks like a three pointed tulip this is your macro setting
