hey guys, ive got a little situation with my friends grow cab. the humidity in the room is really low around 22%. do we need to worry? if so what can we do to fix the problem i know a humidifier is logical but wouldn't we run into the problem of too much humidity. also we are running a 400w hps temps inside the cab stay in the low 70s. thanks in advance.

You can probably put a bucket of water close to the plants and get the humidity to come up some. Simplicity is usually the best way. IMO

crazyhorse nailed it-----passive humidification-----just a wee bucket of water will make things better. keep close track of what you are doing and grow well.

Peace

i dont think low humidity is a problem. i mean if thats a factor thats harms your plants thats one thing but my plants did fine in an area of very very low humidity, at 10 percent sometimes. my plants came out perfect except i started with shitty seeds. but not to worry about low humidity. u can use the bucket or what i would do is just turn off the lamp, wait about an half hour and then give the room and nice foliar spray. i never sprayed the plants directly cause they would get overwaterd and the leaves would droop.

I read that higher humidity gives more females, though not too high obviously, or then there will be other problems to deal with. You don't want the humidity too low or too high obviously, and it depends what stage of the grow process you're in. Different stages have different optimal humidity requirements.

I don't have any control over the humidity in my small grow cabinet, and I found that adding a small bucket or cup of water did nothing really significant to change the humidity level at all. I'm not going to bother with that in the future I think. Why would adding a humidifier give too much humidity ? I would assume that you can control the level and bring it to where you want.

In the future, I'll have both a humidifier and de-humidifier in my growroom, so I can dial it in exactly. Better grow conditions = better yield = better smoke, and more females IMO.

Misting your plants will raise your humidity a bit.

,,,for 5 - 10 minutes or so. That will work great if you have the time to sit in your room all day with a sprayer in your hand :D

Try one of these, mini fogger's > http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=35215&C=Froogle&U=35215&T=29168

My room hits a very low 10% humidity at the start of a grow with lil plants. One of those mini foggers adds 25-30% to that figure,,,,with the added bonus of dropping room temps too ;)

I used to think vegging plants did fine under low humidity until I used a cool mist humidifier, then I saw how they were supposed to grow.I like to get RH around 70% if I can during veg,its hard to get it to stay that high though.Besides vegging plants growing faster/better under humid conditions, its hell on earth for spidermites. The forum standard,75 degrees F and 50% humidity for veg is just that,a forum standard. It isn't fact in my growroom,in fact in my growroom its incorrect.80-85 degrees F and as high as I can get my humidity is where my plants veg best and mites do worst.

I haven't grown for long enough to have any first hand experience of course, but that's just what I read on a couple of breeder sites that made feminized seeds. Do you grow from seeds or clones ?

from dutch passion seeds -

From literature and our own findings it appears that the growth of a male or female plant from seed, except for the predisposition in the gender chromosomes, also depends on various environmental factors. The environmental factors that influence gender are:
a higher nitrogen concentration will give more females.
a higher potassium concentration will give more males.
a higher humidity will give more females.
a lower temperature will give more females.
more blue light will give more females.

For the first 3 weeks of 12/12 veg growth intensifies so I like 50-60% during that time. After 30 days when flowers are forming I kick it down to 40% RH and usually stay there until harvest.

Man I'd take low humidity over high humidity any day. Humidifiers are like 100w while a dehumidifier is 500+ watts.

Like others said a DIY humidifier could be as simple as a bucket of water. To really kick up the humidity, hang a towel from the ceiling dipping in the water bucket and direct a fan towards the bucket.

I couldn't grow productively without both.Maybe a wet towel will raise RH in a small cab,I know it wont do diddly in a 3 by 8 walk in closet because I tried.

That's strange because I usually have the opposite problem when I do the DIY humidifier thing. Usually TOO much humidity, so I've always just used it as a temporary fix.

I've done this in 10x12 bedrooms so I find it kinda strange that it didn't work out for ya. Though in a closet you probably had a good deal of ventilation and airflow, whereas I was working in an larger room with just one lamp so it wasn't necessary to have strong ventilation.

Do you ever get spidermites in veg?Use a cool mist humidifier and reduce the chances a lot, especially at 85 F.
