The Mega Millions jackpot soared to $586 million on Dec. 16, 2013, amid a frenzy of ticket purchases.

Tuesday's Mega Millions jackpot may be the biggest U.S. lottery prize in history thanks to a last-minute ticket buying frenzy.
DES MOINES, Iowa — The Mega Millions jackpot soared to an estimated $636 million on Tuesday, making it the second largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history.

Mega Millions changed its rules in October to help increase the jackpots by lowering the odds of winning the top prize. That means the chances of winning the jackpot are now about 1 in 259 million.
But that hasn't stopped aspiring multimillionaires from playing the game.
"Oh I think there's absolutely no way I am going to win this lottery," said Tanya Joosten, 39, an educator at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee who bought several tickets on Tuesday. "But it's hard for such a small amount of money to not take the chance."
Annie Pedersen also said she wanted to be part of the action, so she jumped in and bought two tickets at a Milwaukee grocery.
"Everybody is so excited about it so I wanted to get in on some of the excitement, too, by watching," she said.
Paula Otto, lead director for Mega Millions, said the jackpot estimate was increased after ticket sales surpassed expectations. She also said officials expect about 70 percent of the possible number combinations to be purchased.

"Our sales for tonight's drawing will be over $300 million," said Otto, also executive director of the Virginia Lottery. "Yesterday we had estimated that our sales would be about $240 million."
She noted that if a winner isn't selected either Tuesday night and for this Friday's drawing, the jackpot could hit $1 billion — an unheard of amount for Mega Millions or Powerball, the nation's two main lottery games.
Mega Millions is played in 43 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Life would quickly become a blur of ritz carlton top floor suites, dom perignon, butterfly tramp stamps, and mohawked vajayjays. I'd bring Heidi Fleiss out of retirement to be my personal liason manager slash grow girl. Just gotta hope my wife don't mind

You got people dreaming now just passnthru

if I won the lottery I would

1- Buy a nice house somewhere remote, prepare some kind of in case of apocalypse, self-sustainable housing, with defense system :p I would also buy a nice condo in the city

2- Give lots of money to my family (some of them are poor, it would give them a chance to maybe get out of the rot, my mom and dad, for all they have done for me) I would also give some to my uncle to hold onto , just in case

3- Sex ? Party ? No powdery stuff though. I would probably go crazy.
I would probably arrange to have one of my friends drive me around town while we smoke spliffs haha, I know that sounds boring but I have always liked doing that

and the reason I don't do it now, because I don't want to get in trouble, but when you got money, you do what you want

4- Give to some noble causes, no women shelters though, they already have enough of that. Maybe I would start a men's shelter or a men's help organisation.

If I won the lottery I think I would do a huge dose of psychedellics right away. boom

what else could I do with that kind of money ?

I would be very careful.

Maybe I'd start a micro-loan company in a third world country, you know, philanthropy

what else ?

Grow herb. Live simple, be high all the time.. do what I feel like... volunteer work

if all that money was put into a single pot and every1 gained interest on whatever money they put in, we would all win. Lottery sounds great but its a bummer if anyone puts all their faith into winning..

dream big and work hard to get there -- if you do win, thats great

Who needs Santa Claus when you hold one of two winning tickets announced in the $636 million Mega Millions lottery in the United States?

The life-changing stubs for the second richest pot in American lottery history were sold in San Jose, California at a gift shop and at a newsstand in Atlanta, Georgia, CBS news reported, quoting lottery officials after the Tuesday night draw.

The jackpot will be split. The names of the winners were not immediately announced.

Winners in this sweepstake can opt between a one time lump sum payment or one smaller payment followed by others over the course of 29 years.

Had there been a single winner in Tuesday's draw the one time cash option was estimated at $341 million -- before taxes.

The jackpot reached its dizzying sum after frantic Americans in 43 participating states, Washington D.C., and the US Virgin Islands spent days snapping up $1 tickets.

Tuesday's combination of six winning numbers was: 8, 14, 17, 20, 39 and 7, the latter being known as the Mega Ball.

But this draw was the first since a rule change in October designed to make it harder to win and thus fatten the jackpot.

Previously, players picked five numbers from one to 56 plus a number from one to 46.

Under the new rules, players pick five numbers from one to 75 plus a number from one to 15 -- shifting the odds of winning from one in 176 million to one in 259 million.

By comparison, the odds of being struck by lightning in the United States in one's lifetime is one in 10,000, according to the National Weather Service

Bought two tickets and didn't win. I was robbed! lol

I heard the lottery was a tax on the stupid. Where is my dunce hat?

Anytime it gets this big you just have to throw down a few dollars.

Back to making money the real way.
