Looking for flavor

I have been growing for a year. The yield and quality are both beyond what I had hoped for. The smoke is very mild in all strains that I have tried, but all seem to have a very mild flavor, as well. AK-48 tasted about the same as a cross that was donated and Northern Lights came out the same way, though the yield on the NL was low.

Is soil and outdoor growing required to produce some of the pine like taste of a good Hawaiian? I remember some brick gold that tasted close to hash some buds that I wouldn't smoke after one hit.

I am happy with what I have done in the past year. It is time to refine my product. If flavor is dictated by outdoor, or soil growing (I use bubble buckets) I'll just enjoy my mild buds - thanks!

IME, the strain itself is the determining factor when it comes to flavor, all things being equal.

For sure the strain makes a hudge difference in the taste...but you will never get the true flavors out of it without growing 100% organic in soil...and when i say 100% organic i mean TLO ( True Living Organics ) not synthetic organic like when the bottle says organic based. hope ive been a little help

If taste is primarily dictated by strain, I'd like to find something that tastes like the Thai sticks back in the 70s, or that green/almost pine like flavor that is always called Hawaiian. Does hash plant have the name for the taste? I'm not excited about fruity, bubblegum, or anything other than some of the classic flavors. Which strains might I want to try for a full flavor and still get good yield and quality? Or, do I need to sacrifice something for flavor? I am surprised that all of several strains that I have grown have about the same, mild flavor. I have studied and believe that I am curing the product properly. If it isn't in a sealed, glass jar, you can stink up a room with an ounce. It smells awesome and I get raves over it, but my taste buds want more. Any suggestions for my next seed purchase?

I can recommend Classic Seeds on Seedbay and Seed Boutique. He breeds authentic, classic strains for great prices. I've gotten some killer flavors from his seeds and all of them yield well to extremely good. He also works with a killer Hawaiian IBL from Puna...good stuff.

even within the strain there is variation so not all plants will be the same. Pre98 Bubba I love the Coffee pheno. GDP,Purple Erkel,Erkel. Just pick some outstanding genetics and go from there.

Horticultural molasses.. still has the sulphur in it as opposed to the edible molasses... a little goes a long way... combined with the right genetics, holy shit I have never seen people bouncing off the walls so much over smell/flavor...

I think when the smell/flavor is good, there is a psycho-somatic effect, people get higher than they would otherwise. I mean they get blasted because its good weed of course, but the utility they get from the product is magnified by their perceptions.

Whipit,

I noticed you mentionned a few times the pine flavour; it's present in quite a few different varieties.

The 'piney' flavour is produced by a gene that is involved in the production of the terpene alpha-pinene.

Most seedbanks don't produce chromatographs which allow you to determine which specific terpenes are present in different herbs. I can tell you offhand though that our Schnazzleberry lines have a pretty high alpha-pinene content as compared to other varieties we've grown.

I'm not sure with other banks, but you might consider asking how much of this terpene is present in the seedline you are interested in. At least it's a start, your scent and potency will come as you find the right clone to grow. Don't be discouraged, it's all part of the learning process... good genetics will find their way to you, and you'll start producing herbs as dank as anybody's.

Good luck with your grow,

WOO-HOO! I was looking for a good Indica for my next run! I'll try the Schnazzleberry #2 and hope for a double! There is nothing but good reviews for this, so a great Indica with a great flavor would be a perfect fit. Thanks for the education and recommendation!
