I've recently aquired about 25 'Humboldt County Skunk' seeds, aquired from a biker in 1984.. The seeds/strain has also been called 'Texas Polecat', but since Sagmartha used to have a strain by the same name (polecat) I'm leaning away from using that name for these seeds to avoid confusion..
An old grower in Texas used to run clones from these seeds, and ran them for aprox 15 yrs.. Unfortunately, he never kept mums... He would just take cuts from his vegging plants and use them for the next cycle..
He kept 2 phenos going, both were heavily indica with very wide fan leaves.. 1 pheno would purple up easily (in texas) and would have spotty, kush like buds, no full colas..
the other 'green' pheno would make more complete colas, but was still heavily indica dom..
Both phenos never more than doubled their height when triggered, grown in a very basic dwc hydro system..
He was one of the greedy growers, as he wouldn't even pass out clones of either pheno to friends, let alone even consider selling them.. And that was the downfall of the texas polecat..
His greedyness, and the fact he never kept mothers led to him loosing everything... His rooting hormone was contaminated and they never rooted, and that was the end of those particular phenos..
He tried to reveg but was unsuccessful, my friend who sourced these seeds still cries to this day thinking about this grower's greedyness, and loss of the only true Road Kill Skunk he has ever seen...
Part of the problem is that this line has insanely wide and hollow stems, which can make rooting a problem.. aswell as revegging.. also, i find the heavily indica dominant strains have more trouble revegging than sativas or sativa doms..
When my friend would go for a visit, he would literally be afraid, as the smell was soooo strong u were expecting a bust at any moment.. trimming was a nightmare, scary to do, and a serious security concern.. Honestly, if these clones didn't die on him, he probly woulda been busted shortly after..
He started the 1st seeds in '84 when he got them, and lost the clones to the rooting issue in 2000.. He passed away shortly thereafter, and the seeds were passed onto his son, along with some other oldskool genetics and seed from the triangle.. Some of the seeds are as old as 1976, but the Humboldt Skunks are what i'm really after, and those are from 1984, so they should still have a good chance to germ..
So, i'm hear now, asking for any tips u guys and girls have on germin old seed.. I know quite a few methods myself, and have some good ideas of what to do.. but before i go and germ them, i'd like to ask around and see if there where any methods I've left out..
This is for the RKS, so it's definately for a good cause, and worth aproaching carefully..
I'd love for Sam to chime in, as I imagine he's germed quite a few older seeds in his day..
And all the RKS lovers out there, please say a prayer, or wish me luck
