I'm going to buy a window or wall mount a/c, 8k or 10k btu and I don't want a pile of crap :frown:

I will pay more for a very good brand. Can anyone reccomend one? Any brands I should stay away from?

Thanks very much :joint:

ac units..

ac units..

Gronut..

Whatup mang..LAst year I had ac problems.. I tried the WintAir homeydepot portable ac/s and so did a few of my friends.. All that I ended up getting was a really jacked up power bill and the ac units did'nt cool well at all.. Make sure and check the amp and wattage draw and make thats a part of your decicision on which unit you choose.
After the crappy ac I bought from HomeyDepot was'nt cutting it.. after i spent 500 bucks.. I bought a central air mini split unit..IT uses less power than the portable unit and cool great.Something for you too look into bro..

Do a search for Mitsubishi mini split system. HIGHLY reccommended......just be prepared to drop a pretty penny.

These units do not need professional instalation either. They come with pre charged lines so there is no silver soldering involved. Just knock a hole in your wall and get power there, hang it on the wall, mount the outside unit and thats about it. You can purchase a 13 seer 2 ton system for about the same price as a 1 ton mini split.....but they are just so much easier for your average joe to install. With the pre-charged lines there really isn't a need to check pressures at all......or pulling a vacuum on the lines.....or all the other things that go with a/c installations. ITS EASY PEASY ! !

Thanks for your help fellas..

Sog, that's what I really want to avoid is having probs with a cheap pile and having to do a return and all that stuff. Aint that annoying... :bat:

SW- I did a search on the Mitsu mini-splits... Yikes those are some expesive little doo dads. About $1200 for a 10k btu. That's about twice the cost of a standard window/thru wall type I think. I wonder if they are more money just for the fact that the condenser is separate and can be put outside :chin: How do you deal with the water/condensation draining?

My grow room is a room inside of my garage and I have the ability to frame in a standard thru wall type. The only thing is that the heat and exhaust will be fillin up my garage. I can build a makeshit hood around it and vent it if I use the standard type. If I get a mini-split I would still have to put the condenser in the garage. I can't put it outside in case my pops-in-law comes over.. "hey gronut, what's that for" haha.

What do you think of having the heat and exhaust blowin in the garage? A bad idea?

Thanks again..

As long as you have a little venting in the garage it should do fine. The drain goes through the wall with the hi/low lines. You can collect this water as it is pure for the most part...or, if you aren't gonna penetrate an exterion wall, you would use a drain pump which is a little pump and a small res. with a float switch. They are more money because they are built with higher qualitly components than most window shakers. AND THEY ARE ALMOST SILENT ! ! Do you use c02? most window shakers pull a little bit of fresh air while this one doesn't. anyways, i'm more than willing to answer any questions. Ask away my bro in dro :)

Dont know if this will fill your application but I put a ton of time and money in window a/c's then bought a couple portable units, started with a 9,000 btu then bought a 12,000 btu. the 12,000 did ok for a small room 6'x6' and providing the exhaust area is close, if i tried to exhaust up 10' with no booster fan the unit overheated.
These portable units run a $400.00+ Now I bought a Trailer a/c unit 2-1/2 ton totaly self contained, dont need a furnace to blow the air or draw the return, the unit sits outside like a home central A/C condencer unit with a 12" flex supply and a 14" C/A return. I picked this unit used for $ 300.00 so if yur running a several 10000 lights this will take care of what ever ya put in your room

GroNut, I wish I could remember what brand we had once, it was great. The big thing was that the compression hung in the part of the ac body that was outside the window, unlike so many other ac units. Was the most quiet thing.

Have you ever considered a stand-along unit that can just sit in the room? Dunno if I have helped but I do try.....<G>

Thanks for the replies friends

My flower room is 12'x4'x7' 336 cube feet so I don't need a big thing. I can vent my lights as well so I'm thinking of somthing small and efficient so I can keep the power bill as low as possible while keepin my temps in check.

I spent some time with google and learned a fair bit. A portable A/c has a lower eer (energy efficientcy rating) than a through wall type so I will likely go with a window shaker. I may not even need 10k btu with vented lights so I'm even considering in the range of 6 to 8k btu which will burn less watts and I live near the coast so I don't really have much probs with hi outside temps so the a/c should not be working too hard...I hope.

I was looking for a tried and true brand to go with but after reading a bunch of consumer reviews it seems that brand has a lil less to do with a quality a/c than the specific model in question. Most all brands have some good machines and some junk ones as well. I will steer clear of Maytag and Frigid air as these have the most complaints for noise and reliability issues.

Thanks again for the help, I appreciate it!

just to note: the split ac does need a vacuum as there is air in the lines you install. Anyone else have any info on this? What did you do?

Mitsubishi MiniSplits come with precharged lines filled with R-22 FREON....all you need to do is screw them on....

R22 can be purchased at an automotive store, I've even seen it a wallyworld around here, no license needed. Use it to flush the lines so you don't have to buy a vacuum pump. I bought a whirlpool brand 9k or 10k window unit, real nice, quiet. 1 season so far but it ran hard last summer and never failed, always restarted. Make sure whatever you buy has an auto restart feature should the power go out while your away. Not all units have an auto restart so look for this feature. It sucks to walk into 100+ temps when you have a perfectly good ac unit that isn't turned on because the power blinked for a second during the hot part of the day.
Stay safe!

I bought a lil peice of shit like I was trying to avoid in the first place :pointlaug I have my lights cooled so I thought I'd be a wise ass and get a 6k btu... cooled enuf but it failed with the dehum capability. it's an LG..

thats the lil crapper up there on the roof

I changed up to a 10k btu kenmore and it's been workin tits with 3k of lights. cools and dehumidifies perfectly.

Next one will be a mr slim thats for my buddys flat which can't accomodate a window shaker type.

Yea a good estimation would be 3000-4000BTU per 1K of lighting, this is a loose guideline though

SonshineWurship - the Mitsubishi MiniSplits I have seen are 410A not r22. What is a precharged line exactly? I know units comes precharged, but not the line. Do you have one? Just trying to get accurate info

The mini splits are available in a few Freon options.....depending on your operating temp range. A pre-charged line is about 25 ft long with check valves in each end that holds freon until you screw them on the units. No, i don't have one but i have installed a few. I am no longer doing A/C work so im about a year out of date.....Searching through google or yahoo about them will give you much better specs and info on them then i could provide. Just trying to provide a little extra info, rather than reccomending something then ignoring the following questions.

Peace Everyone
