CA State law allows you to possess the amount of cannabis that your doctor recommmends. However, if your doctors doesnt recommemd a certain amount on your rec (most don't), then the legal amount depends on what county you are in. The limits approved by each county must meet or exceed the CA state limit of 8oz dried bud and 12 live plants.
Next time you visit your doctor tell them to specify a higher limit on your recommendation; this will give you a better defense in court if the police decide to fuck with you, and may even prevent them from doing so.
Remember police can do whatever they want, but if you know the law you can usually beat the charges and get your stuff back.

when I got visited in sd by the pigs. they didn't even count plants. checked my paperwork. told me they busted a similar grow previously not medical and then left.i was way over my alleged limit.
