your going to get alot of opions on that, I cant MH bulb every 8-9 months,
and my HPS every year, now alot of people will say change more often, but i've got a buddy with a fuck it attitude, and has had the same hps bulb for 4-5 years, and his plants look good.

I change my 400 watters every grow... (3-4 months)
without a meter its only a guess at best! suggestion; buy a meter or at the very least use a cameras lumen meter, when the bulbs are new to compare loss over time. After 15% loss change should be soon. PAR meters are availible (PAR measures plant usable light, compared to lumens which is total light produced) and are around 150 usd or so. Useful to gauge reflective sheeting angles light areas and weak spots.
