Any light escaping your room is an issue. Especially the orange glow of a HPS. Pretty distinct.

I had to do this with my window AC unit. Not sure what AC you have but mine recirculates air from the inside only. I took the outer housing off and there is a molded piece of styrofoam that forms the inside air channel. Well, 2 of them that fit together I think. You should be able to remove it. Go to a hardware store and buy a tube of black silicone. Black spray paint doesn't work worth a shit. Coat all inside and outside surfaces of the styrofoam with the silicone caulk. Press it into the pores of the styrofoam and wipe the excess away. Several times if need be. Let it dry and then put it back together. On a sealed unit, the styrofoam should be the only thing that leaks light.

If you've got some other type of AC unit, then I'm not sure.

Its just a standard 5000 btu window ac.Not even sure on the brand rite now.Yeh lites on at nite cus of temps and that orange glow is kinda distinct. It glows rite through the radiator type part that faces out.you can see an outline of the fan inside standing outside looking at it.I mean its not a major deal or anything house isnt in the hood or whatever.Just wondered if there was an easy fix for this.Im use to basements where you gotts build boxes off the back of em with inline fans attached to evacuate the air as it comes out.Lite was never the problem.Never thought this would come up but it did.Thanxx for the comments, all info welcome.Peace.

Here's what I did with mine.
Opened it up and covered both sides of the styro separater with the heaviest foil tape I could find, make sure you cover every inch of the styro, takes a while, but it's light tight and runs fine.
