lightproof intakes

I am running into some problems with my intakes leaking some light in. the intakes come from adjacent rooms so when there is light on sometimes it will get in while the room is dark. This isnt a problem at the moment as the plants are in veg, but I think if any light leaks in during the dark period of flower it will totally mess up the buds?

I was just wondering if anyone has any bright ideas for making the intakes lightproof without [too much] air resistance.

Making your intakes have a 90 degree angle works for me and lets NO light in. Just get some 4 inch pipe and connect them.

notpot- I have been thinking about this same problem for my upcoming (to be finished-out) grow space. I was planning on using a louvered vent cover on the inside (which remains closed when fan is off). This should cut out the light from the adjacent room when fan is off. How about when the fan comes on during a dark cycle? Well, I was thinking of covering the end of the 4" pipe (on the inside of the grow space-just behind the louvered cover) with black speaker cloth. You know, the kind of cloth on the front of your home stereo speakers. This shouldn't restrict air flow enough to worry and it should cut out any potential light leakage. As I say, I haven't tried it yet but I am thinking that I will. Just a thought on the topic.

By the way, Home Depot carries the louvered vent cover in their HVAC (Air condition duct/Vent Dept.) department. They are cheap . . . about $5.00 US.

try building a box around the intake andhave two inner boards in the box, one attached to thetop and one attached to the bottom, but leaving a gap on the opposite end of either one, this way any light will be "Trapped" so 2 speak in the space between the 2 inner boards as it canot go twice through 90 degrees. this works for me, no problem at all, the only light leakage i had was when i was usin cheap dryer hose instead of proper duct to connect my extractor.

Good links there spotted cow. I just used pvc pipe with three 90 degree angle pieces, painted them black. Works great.

I sure do like those darkroom vents tho.

Mo,

have you guy's every just tried placing a vent damper in there i'm pretty sure this is exactly what they are made for........................

I bought a "Alergen and Smell reducing Furnace Filter" from home depot and lowes. There are 2 layers to it, one being a black carbon layer. I cut the Carbon layer into 6 even pieces, and I put 4 layered on top of each other duct taped to my intake. Now no light gets out of the intake, and very little smell when the vent is turned off.
