Lightproof during veg?

Hi all. I am building my closet grow piece by piece and want to know If my closet need to be lightproof for veg. I ask this because I am saving up for the big can fan and filter combo. Can I just cover my closet in panda wrap, stick in an oscillating fan and get started that way?

Light leaks are not a big deal in veg. Frankly they're danger is sometimes over stated in flower too. Plants out in nature get hit with light all the time during the night, and near mankind they're hit with HID light, headlights, house lighting, etc.. So absolute perfect darkness isn't necessarily "natural", but it definitely is the least stressful. I'm vegging 24/0 under fluorescents right now, but I used to veg under a 400W metal halide for 18/6. I like not having the dark period or needing a timer for my veg chamber anymore.

That is great to hear. Starting the plants out cheaply would definitly help me want to chunk out 350 bucks for a can33 and 449cfm fan! It is hard to save up for a grow when I can head up to the club today!

yer its cool dude, plants in veg show no problems with interupted light periods

Agree with everyone that's posted but I still try to avoid them as much as possible. I keep layers of panda film over the doors, know what I mean? Just a more natural environment, but it don't harm them at all.

Magic makes a really good point though.

Awesome. I am going to make the closet pretty light proof, and then 100% once I pick up a fan and filter. Right now I am stuck betweena regular 6inch fan or high output to feed a can33. I am only going to grow 3 plants, but will be growing for quality. Is this overkill?

Haha, that is the plan. I would like to upgrade to a 4x4 area with a 600 or 1000 watter. For now though, if the can33 is a bit overkill, what would be appropriate for 3 plants? Thanks for all your help!

Just get the can33 bro, it'll save the trouble later.

just wanted to mention something, if you're tight on money... maybe consider building your own filter if you're a DIYer, you can save some money that way. and the light situation has already been addressed, total darkness is GREAT but not exactly required. good luck!

I asked this question a while back and also through personal experience as I've switched back and forth on various settings from 18/6 to 24/0 out of necessity / power consumption attempts... and have not seen any true drawbacks.

I did like 24/0 just for the sake of simplicity.

:2cents:

FYI - size of scrubber shouldn't be decided on by the # of plants, but instead your room's size & design (including the all-important negative pressure) and amount of stink generated.

I don't know guys, people swear up and down there's a difference, maybe I'm one of them... I've done everything over 18/6 and 18/6 just seemed less stressful for my plants. 24 made them kinda spindly like and 20/4 seemed even worse? I don't know, maybe it's just me though. Wouldn't 24/0 be like one real long day for them? Again, maybe it's just me...

I will stick with the can33 then. I do enjoy diy, but would I really be able to build an equal unit with approx 16lbs of carbon for much cheaper? I also plan (or hope rather) to grow some super smelly plants. I might even dedicate one of them for cooking purposes only.

Pictures of the closet and bubble buckets coming soon :).

Yea, i prefer 18/6 Myself. I have tried 24/0 before and the plants didn't seem to react any better, and IMO worse than when running 18/6. Plus, it's always good to converse $$energy$$.

But as far as light leaks, during veg it's no problem. But in flower it can be a big deal, some people might not think so but when i've had light leaks i've always gotten a hermie or two. Maybe just bad luck, but it seems to make a difference from my experience.

The less stress on the plants the better IMO.

I will definitly give my plants 18/6 so they can get some rest. Isn't there a certain type of growth that only occurs at darkness?

So I am settled on the can33 and will be getting a vortex or can fan to go with it depending which vendor has the best prices. I am currently between bghydro, green coast and htg. Bg seems to have the best prices

Be sure to check Vortex prices at mdhydro.com. No tax in Calif., and shipping on fans is pretty cheap, even from Maryland.

after talking to bg hydro they recommended the can fan over the vortex and referenced a YouTube video as an example of it being quieter. It was only like ten bucks more so I picked that up can6ho and the can33.

Now I have the black poly, fan n filter on it's way, and bubble buckets being built! All I need now is a replacement 430w hortilux hps bulb and I can start building!

Do nor cal growers have any difficulty with humidity?
