Right now I have 3 x 65w CFL's on 24 and have 8 plants a month old and 30 or so seedlings around 2 weeks. I am in the same boat you are but our weather is changing and the next couple days we are moving from the high 70's to the low 60's. So Monday I am switching over to a 400w HPS.
Get a thermometer, put it in the top of the space, flick on the HPS, and kick back and peek every half hour or so. Do the same with the cfls.
Figure out how long it takes for the room to get to your max for each light setup. Then figure which one you will be able to squeeze out more watts from.
Maybe, just maybe, you might find out that you can have the cfls on 24/7, and the hps on for a staggered timer during the whole day, too. Sure, it's a lot of starts, but you said the problem was heat, not bulbs.
It's just spending a day, and it's some info you can use until...
I got thermometers in both areas. My veg area runs 80-85 with two 26w cfls running 24/7. My flower room runs the one 70w hps at about 80-85 during lights on and mid 70s when lights are off. It pulls air from the veg room into the flower room and when I add more cfls to the veg room the temp gets too high in both rooms. I was wondering if I should leave the autos in the veg room with 52 watts worth of cfls or move both the autos and some extra cfls overs to the flower room and shut down the veg room. The autos could then have stronger lighting but they would get it for only for 12 hours per day.
simplified
52 watts at 24/0 or 122 watts at 12/12 for a pair of lowryder dwarf mix
Maybe you could put the HPS ballast outside of the box. This would definitely affect the amount of heat build up. Since your cab is so small, and you're doing autoflower, you could just make it one chamber and fill it, although I know from experience that you might even have troubles keeping most autos in there at that height, without training them, or something.
But with autos, there is no need for separate veg and flower, or even different lights for the two stages. it would be a lot easier that way, too.
I have a similar sized space, only shorter in height. I use 4 18 watt flo tubes. I know I could use another bulb, like a cfl, and get a slightly better yield, but I don't have any vent. I think you should yank the separation wall, use the lights you have with the hps further over on one side and put your plants further into flower on that side. I would also start my plants in smaller containers, and load up so i wouldn't be bummed if too many males show up. Then you can pot up as time passes. With one space, you'd only need one fan going, too.
Work it right, and you can get a lot out of that space.
I am not looking to redo the whole cab as I plan on growing non autoflower strains in it as well. Just looking for some advice about which would be better for an auto 52 watts at 24/0 or 122 watts at 12/12.
The temps will probably start falling off soon and I will be able to up the amount of lights. The ballast for the hps is in the utility room not the flower room. I plan on running some powerskunk after the current bagseeds are finished but I will probably keep some autos going in the veg room at all times just to maximize the cab space.
