Lighting - 12/24

typical bloom lighting regimes are typically 12/12 or 13/11 and probably some other variations but would there be detrimental effects on growth, maturation rates and yield running them at 12 hours on and 24 off??

I've run 24&48 hours dark before harvest and some times to change the 12 hour on period from 6pm to 6am to 6am to 6pm in the transition to winter or summer with no noticeable affects but they would be cut 'today' so who knows.. just blasted and thinking.. now out loud, to you.:artist:

never ran 13/11 in flower. Some Sativa require a longer dark period like 10/14 to flower.

Never tried 24 or 48 hours dark mid flower seems like you would lose some prime growing time doing this. You would think losing a full day of growing time in midflower would definitely effect yield and more than likely increase flower time.

I have tried 24 hours dark at harvest but never saw any advantages from it. so I just cut at lights on from 12/12 now. The old adage was the 24 hours of dark would cause the trics to swell at harvest but I can not substantiate this thru experience. maybe someone else can.

a 12 hour swing seems kinda long to simulate winter. Think maybe 13/11, 12/12, 11/13, 10/14 light to dark would be more realistic. Days get shorter nights get longer in the winter. Surprised that 12 hour swing from the Am light on to Pm lights on doesn't cause stress.

DJ short is an advocate of 10/14, 11/13 light schedule saying that it will show phenotype expressions not show in a standard 12/12.

I typically stick with something like 11.5/12.5 unless they are slow to show sex then lengthen the dark period to 10/14 to try and speed up sexing. Usually after 14 to 21 days not showing sex. This is rare except on equatorial sativas.

I think with a 12/24 light schedule you would reduce overall yield/crop and yield/watt, and yield/time, so nothing good comes of this. You might (or might not) get a very slight yield/gram (potency) increase. I doubt it.

My delusions... During flower, the plant stores energy during daylight that is used in darkness. An estimate would be that the plant can support about as much darkness metabolism as is created by the lightness metabolism (just makes sense), so additional darkness past that point and eventually the plant runs lower on energy and so less efficient. This is a rough estimate, and strain dependent. For that reason, I personally run and recommend 11/13 barring strain-dependent issues (I don't have those). I want to use all the night, just a little extra to be sure, and finish with no "energy" left. I am personally convinced a big source of unintentional hermies and other issues is bad light, and a part of those are caused by 12/12 when 11/13 reduces the chance of a problem to 0.

As far as "change the 12 hour on period", I cannot imagine a benefit to the plant from this, and potentially a plant would not like this at all. Shifting lights-on a little one way or another... no prob. Flipping night and day on a flowering plant... uncool.

The only change in light schedule I allow... if I am going to be home with the girls, I sometimes turn the timer off and leave the light on an extra two hours. Then back on the timer. This gives two extra hours with lights on for care. So an 11/13 schedule with some 13/11's mixed in. :)

Peace!
