Light problem please help

OK here we go... I'm almost too buzzed to type so bear with me and forgive me of my fuck ups! Thank God for spell check./

I redesigned my 400 w grow area, got it all hooked up and turned the 400w on and it just sat there and flickered and flickered and flickered... WTF, hopefully its just the bulb,it was working fine when I turned it off in May, but when I tried to find the place I ordered from last January, I can't find the web site now. It was econ-lights or close to that, does any one know the address? They had replacement bulbs for $8.95, much cheaper than Home Depot.

One more question, are the Hortex and other bulbs like them worth the extra $35 or more? I have had good luck with the standard bulb that came with my 400W HPS security light and don't have the extra $$$ unless its going to increase my bud size or tightness.

Thanks in advance,
Nickel

Nickel Bag - did you rewire anything? if so make sure you have a good connection to all wires... i had that flicker happen to me and turned out that 2 wires weren't connected properly.

The only time horticultural lamps are a benefit in my opinion is in flower,I definately like the hortilux over standard HPS.I used to use expensive agrosun MH for veg and found this to be pretty much of a waste, the stndard lamps be it MH or HPS will veg a plant just fine.

RobBanks,
Thanks for those addresses, I was leaving out the dash and couldn't find it.

linksys,
All I did to the light ficture was put a new plug on it, I already re checked those connectors (black to hot and white to common, green to ground).

I noticed the bulb looks a little black on the inside tube at the end of it, don't know if that is normal or not. I just know it was working when I took it down to redesign my room.

Thanks for all the replies, it realy helped me to check every thing out, I will post when I find the problem.

UPDATE,

I checked the econ-lights web site and the bulbs were 7.95, but shipping was 10 bucks. I checked Lowes like JJ suggested and they had the sylvania bulb for 21.99 ( I guess they raised the price since you got yours JJ or maybe it is just location) anyhow I went ahead and bought it from Lowe's rather than waiting for it. I screwed it in and it came on bright as ever :) !!!! Thanks for all the suggestions, this site is great for helping with problems.

If you could get a hortilux for under 50 bucks then go for it...the ones in my city are about 80!

Hopefully you only have a bulb problem and not your ballast. gluck

I get 400w watt sylvania bulbs at lowes for 16.99. As for the expensive bulbs, I have used many kinds and have found the inexpensive ones do a fine job.....
I get 400w watt sylvania bulbs at lowes for 16.99. :yoinks: wow i'll have to check my local lowes lol why pay 35 at the local hydro shop when i can get 1 there for 17$ lol how many grows do you get from a lowes 400w bulb ??? 2 maybe 3 then change bulb out ??? or every new grow ??

The best deals I've run into on HID lights is at an electrical supply house, just act like your an electrician doing a side job and you can usually get them cheap

The lowes I go to has them priced at 21.99 + tax. I could have ordered it from E-conolights they have 400W HPS bulbs for 7.99 and 10.00 for shipping. These are not Hortex bulbs but the one I used last year grew some good bud, it didn't get as tight as I like, I think it was because the temps got too high instead of the non Hortex bulb causing it. I should have the heat under control this grow, because I cut a hole in my lamp enclosed box and mounted a exhaust pan fan on it, then I will run my drier hose to my outside exhaust fan.

Sounds like a plan to me anyway.
