Lets talk Security beef..

Any new state of the art security beef ups to be had? I had a friend get robbed recently and it made me think of my own vulnerabilities. Maybe need to tighten up the laces a bit. Any suggestions on making a place ultra secure without the use of guns or dogs?

Respectfully,

You can get a really fucking loud alarm. They make some inexpensive ones that basically require ear protection when they go off. It will help drive a thief out due to noise (so loud it hurts) and risk of exposure (people outside hear it).

Why no dogs or guns? You are ruling out the most important items in self defense.

Maybe less than lethal quality police grade stun guns. Trip alarms, motion lights, hanging fish hooks on fishing line.

If you like trip alarms check these out.....http://www.pyrocreations.com/inc/sdetail/624/11971

Can you tell us a little more about your buddy getting robbed, or maybe the way you think you might get robbed? Was it a sneak attack, or a home invasion?

I have IR Cameras and a dvr running 24/7.
The camera's are outside and very visible.

At night the dull glow of the IRleds appears to be a deterrent.
Found foot prints outside my back gate a while back.
They saw the cameras and went elsewhere. :)

For a little over $200, I got a DVR and 4 cams.
The DVR is locked in a closet and there's a VHS recorder just inside the back door that is a decoy.

My med rec. is directly below the cage cam.
Might be useful if I ever get an official visit, yah?

OB, my buddy got a sneak attack, burgled while away. Someone chiseled through a 12" cinderblock wall and then a wooden wall of 3 inches of plywood. Then stole his security system on the way out. Myself I just feel I could be a little more on guard. I dont have my dvr cams up at the moment but after his misfortune I got them out and began hooking em up. My gates are locked and signs posted and motion lights in effect as well as dogs and other things I dont care to mention. I say no dogs and guns cause both things arent real security IMO rather self defense and a dog is merely an alarm. On top of that guns + medicine = federal fun. Not worth all the added points to be all strapped up for ww3, been through it before. Good tips Weezard, I like the decoy recorder idea. Mine is linked to the internet where it stores footage as well as on the dvr so if they nabbed it I still got em recorded... A panic button might be a good idea with a wailing siren... Let the neighbors know if they hear it what to do...

" a dog is merely an alarm."

Depends on the size of the dogs.:tiphat:

Doors are usually the weak point , steel door and frame opening outwards is a lot harder to get past than one that can be kicked or rammed in , and not very expensive.

Look how quickly the cops smash a door in with a glorified fence post rammer on TV.

Guess a lot of descisions depend on wether you want the police to turn up ,or definately not.

I hate cctv in public places but best idea around a house , have one concealed inside as well , as all you often get from outside cameras is unidentifiable yobs with hoodies down and scarves up.

The person stealing from my shed and garden caught on tape turned out to be someone i considered a good freind , which was worse than the actual loss.

Would be carefull with mantraps , tho its very tempting.

Local had repeated break ins at a garage workshop years back , wired an internal door handle to the mains , and nearly killed a fireman attending a genuine fire one night , threw the book at him.

I'd use instinct. One night my buddy called me up back in Canada and kept saying somethings not right he was sleeping and had a nightmare. Sure enough next day he arrives at his grow op and busted back window. All gear and plants gone, play station 3 gone. Was a shitty day for all of us but an enlightening experience. Learn from your friend, take the necessary precautions now while you are too late.

I wish I took the proactive approach myself.

An obvious security system provides little security. All you need is a ski mask to become anonymous again.

Damn, that's some ocean's 11 shit...

Try to get montion sensing cameras that will SMS/email/etc. when activated. My homie has some. Google it and i'm sure you can find whatever he has or better.

Always make it appear someone is home.

Decoys are always worth the money.

Imagine you are a thief and figure out good points of entry. Now make them bad points of entry. 1 way in, 1 way out. Make your shit the Thunderdome.

How are you all getting broken in to? Have you told people? have people seen you bring in supplies? I mean obv someone knows ur growing right? I have a little setup and im hoping no one will find out and come after me.

You can get this anti-shatter window film to put on your downstairs or otherwise accessible windows. It's probably not going to outright stop somebody from getting in through a window, but it can slow them down greatly. If they feel like it is slowing them down too much they may just leave.

I think that is one of the best ways to deter thieves, have something unexpected happen when they have already started. It throws a wrench in their plans and they'll probably give up and bolt.

If I ever have a dedicated grow spot I think I'm going to just put straight up plywood over the windows. On the inside that is. Behind the blinds so you would either have to be inside the house or break through the window to tell.

LOL I couldnt imagine having a window to my grow. All windows are screwed shut and discreetly boarded up. A good tip is to use deadbolts that need a key on both sides. I had a person I considered a good friend come and rob me once. He couldnt get in anywhere so he pushed in the ac unit in the veg room and went in. Funny thing is he couldnt get out anywhere so he had to go out the same way. Had to be a pain in the ass. I make sure and bolt down any ac units these days. I dont think you could penetrate my grow without some major tools and a lot of noise. Im going for more cameras and motion detectors. Also buried pressure sensors in certain areas to know well before anyone gets close. Radio signal sends an alert to base station letting you know what zone has been activated, even has a handheld radio option to allow you to be alerted in the field. Something like a 5 mile radius. Also have been looking hard at this place

I think this one is next...

Get rid of the guns at the grow spots, it can only lead to bad, bad stuff. Bear mace is
the shit, you can take someone out very, very effectively. Even at the Fed level mandatory minimum sentences are not being enforced as much anymore for grows, they are for guns though.

I second the bear mace, my bro used it on me once in the back yard accidentaly. For couple seconds I had no thoughts in my head.

I will be lining my door with acoustical foam and razor blades, so they ever decide to kick it I got some dna evidence. I also plan on an automatic IR motion detector pepper spray. got a gas mask, next to my my gun safe. I got the studs marked so I know where to punch through and start shooting if need be. if they are holding a weapon I politely ask with gun in hand and gas mask on to leave and no further actions will be taken to get you. If they decide to keep there eye on the prize and fail to clearly realize they are messing with the wrong individual I will wing em if they got a meger weapon...if they bring guns I am aiming center mass and playing for keeps. I also want to re-enforce that area with plate steel as well as the door. I will protect myself more than the plants. I am a little hesitant on a cam as like previously stated a ski mask make that a moot, and I tend to bend the law on veg plant count. I have heard of insanity defense, but never a OCD plant collector defense lol....

been toying with Idea as the gun looks too threatening, I want to lead them to believe they have the upper hand and not get stupid and take the first shot and make things get ugly. So my idea is to build a compressed gas multi barrel blow gun with 12" barrels I don't need that much accuracy. Poisoned with palythothoa toxin...but yes this shit is VERY VERY lethal. Many years ago I got poisoned from skin contact, direct blood stream contact is a different ballpark as its onset will be much much quicker. I will tape an envelope to the door that reads put this in your pocket before entering this room. Inside it will read get to a fucking hospital or die a slow painful death..your call. Cops come, notify all surrounding hospitals...that there might be individuates heaving there guts out and cramping so bad.....without any know explanation... All is fair in love and war, but yea I will let them have an even playing field, even though they are still a ripper and a shit bag.

First, that is premeditated; looks bad from a legal standpoint.

I will tape an envelope to the door that reads put this in your pocket before entering this room. Inside it will read get to a fucking hospital or die a slow painful death..your call.
Then you have written proof that you intended to use it, before knowing what the situation would be.

I don't think a poison blowgun is a good self defense weapon anyway. Say you blast a couple darts into somebody 10 or 15 feet away. If they have a gun or a knife or any other deadly weapon, do they still have the strength to use it on you? I don't think it would have the kind of rapid takedown power that you would want. "get to a fucking hospital or die a slow painful death" makes it sound like they would still have enough strength to do a whole lot. And they're not going to stop to read a letter you wrote them in the middle of breaking in, getting shot by a blowgun and then doing whatever they do next.

The best thing you can do is avoid anything the law would easily deem a "deadly weapon". A taser, stun gun or pepper spray will all rapidly incapacitate somebody. They also have the added benefit of generally being viewed as self defense weapons, so somebody who uses them will more likely be viewed as doing so in self defense.

The thing to keep in mind is that we are already viewed as criminals by most of the country. It is important to do everything you can do to make it look like you are not a lowlife thug.

yea very true...ak-51..thanks for pointing out how twisted some of us can think on here sometime...I was venting. the thing about a tazer is you only get one shot and look like a gun...I dont want them to be trigger happy and 999 out of 1000 times I would probably let em jack my shit and stay safe in my closet. I like the idea of keeping flex cuffs around, after the pepper spray goes off. I keep a set in my car.

A lot of people are in the midset of "fuck it, I ain't the one!", but I think you have the right mindset here, which is that your life is more important than your property.

It's true the taser only has one shot, and I'm not sure how well it would go through a winter coat if it were that time of the year. And pepper spray is really an area-of-effect weapon; if you spray it inside it's pretty much a sure thing that it will get you at least a little bit. I don't like the idea of stun guns due to having to be in direct contact with an assailant. And the other bad news about these three things is that it is possible for the law to consider them deadly weapons, despite them being purposefully designed to be non-lethal. Nevertheless, I think these things offer the best balance of protection and legal status.

This brand sprays a foam 25+ at a very high speed http://www.udap.com/spraytime.htm
You would not necessarily get it on you even if you were spraying it directly into the wind.

There are so many scenarios were this stuff will do great, not to mention it is non lethal.
So many people think that they would be fine with having to shoot someone. There is no
material object in this world worth having to kill someone. Outside of protecting a love one
there is no way I could justify taking some out.
