Less perlite using grow bags

G

Guest

After using grow bags for a few years I seem to be able to use less perlite in my mix for 4-5 gallon bags. Less perlite means more nutrients in my line of thinking. Anyone else using less perlite with grow bags ? I still use about 20% +-

Not sure how low I can go without having issues. Anyone one else experiment with perlite ratios in grow bags ?

While I can, I don’t.
I get better roots with well aerated soil.
I look for amendments other than perlite with a higher CEC value.

I use the rectangular storage tubs to grow in. So really there's o my 6 inches of depth to the compost. Similar style to growbags, just a tad deeper and not so wide. But I don't use any drainage holes in the base of the tubs or any perlite at all. If you were doing garbage bins like bog used to, then there maybe some benefit to it, but if there's not enough weight on the bottom to compact the compost, I really don't see the point.
