It's a start - big thanks to whoever let the cat outta the bag...WINNIPEG - Winnipeg police have charged one of their officers with attempted murder and another with fabricating evidence in the shooting of man they mistakenly thought was a robbery suspect.
Police shot Kristofer Shawn Fournier in the buttocks on July 16, 2007, and charged him with attempting to grab an officers' gun.
Winnipeg Police Chief Keith McCaskill said Thursday that following an internal investigation, police have charged one of the officers with attempted murder, fabricating evidence and other offences.
McCaskill called the allegations serious and profoundly troubling. He hoped they wouldn't affect public confidence in police.
"It is like any organization. If something goes wrong it shouldn't paint everyone with the same brush," McCaskill said at a news conference.
"But it is troubling. We want our officers to do the right thing. These are allegations - serious allegations - but they are allegations and we are going to have to get all of the evidence in court, which we are going to do."
Another officer has been charged with fabricating evidence, aiding and abetting the discharge of a firearm with intent to wound, dangerous driving and other charges.
The names of the officers, who have been placed on leave, are to be released on Friday.
The two officers are to appear in court on June 1.
Most of the charges against Fournier have been dropped.
