Lending toward a ceramic filter over an r/o unit

I need something better to cleanse my water with than this simple carbon filter, I saw some peeps on one of those survivor type shows purifying some of the nastiest bacteria and algae infested water for drinking with a ceramic filter and 2 Home Depot buckets!!
A few things I'm not liking about r/o systems is the waste water they leave behind, they strip too many minerals from the water too that you'll need to replace plus the fact they can be a bit pricey ....with my savings I could stock up on some replacement filters.

Anyone else using a ceramic filter to purify their water with or should I just grab an r/o system?

Ceramic filters are used to keep out harmful bacteria. When used in hard water the minerals quickly clog up the ceramic filter and it must be scrubbed with abrasive cloth to get it to filter again. Good for drinking water. Lousy as a substitute for RO.

I cannot afford to waste water or money on RO units so I simply use rainwater or melted snow. Naturally distilled water that is free. It makes hydroponics a breeze. I have tried using Cal Mag and notice no difference in results with or without. Good nutrients should have all the calcium and magnesium you need.
