LED lights in a Micro Grow

Hello everyone, I've been lurking here for a few months and taking in as much as I can. I haven't started a grow yet but I'm planning on building a box similar to what Dr Bud is doing with CFL's. I was wondering if anyone tried a LED lighting system in one of these stealth box set up?

Do an Advanced Search for led -zeppelin -zepplin by Titles Only. This will give you around 80 threads to look through (minus the Led Zeppelin threads)

Punch line is, LEDs are the future but, the future isn't here yet.

Used to get this question all the time. We tested several different kinds at the store (those old ones on strips, and the ones with like flood lights on a track, and newer ones like the UFO & Procyon 100). The Procyon 100 was the best we tested, and it looked super-bright, but growth was very slow. I agree with freezer -- LEDs are not yet an appealing option. T5s are higher performance and lower cost.

pl CFLs are a good alternative too.

LEDs are for master tinkerer's still. Some cool potential, and the people who REALLY know what they are doing have success, but it is not ready for prime time yet.

CFLs do work well. I'm not super-knowledgeable about fluoros but I think that CFls are sorta like curled up T5s with an elec. ballast attached? The tubes are a little thinner, but they're pretty similar. I used a bunch of reading lamps with CFLs for an emergency home for my moms, and it actually worked pretty well -- big pain in the ass to bring them into the bathroom to water them in the tub though, and it kinda fucked over the floor in that closet.

the pl CFLS are basically the curled up CFLs (i.e. the ones made to replace standard light bulbs) straightened out into a tube, with a remote ballast. They are used in aquarium hoods quite a bit.
