I decided to give coco coir a try, and planted 3 good bagseeds about 2 weeks ago.
mix:
coco from petsmart, rinsed 2 times. added 20% perlite and 20%EWC and tbs/gal dolomite lime (2 have it, 1 doesn't). They are currently in 16 oz cups. I water with distilled, haven't adjust the pH yet, which is around 7.

here they are after 2 days under light, the 2 bigger ones have the lime mixed in.

after 2 weeks: this one has the lime mixed in

biggest one, 5th node, with lime also, but I dropped the cup 2 days ago and thats why it's a bit droopy.

smallest, no lime added. you can see a difference between the problems with the other 2.

any ideas? pH too high? did I not rinse out the coir enough??

it's all I can find locally, sold as reptile bedding. I have used it before growing mushrooms, which are pretty sensitive. I added lime to act as a Ca and Mg source and it acts as a pH buffer. I plan on going organic, this mix is posted and seems popular over in the organic forum. Supposedly with this mix pH adjusting should be a thing of the past.

Yeah thats what I thought Master you were doing organic. I think you have lockout going on

coco is inert... they look like they want some Nitrogen and less of the other stuff... feed coco like you feed hydro.. it's not about the substrate it's about the nutes... what are you feeding them?? just water? 2 weeks in coco with just water will use all the N the plant can find... btw... always adjust the ph to 6-6.5... you'll save yourself a lot of headaches and you'll know that the unadjusted ph isn't causing nute lockout making your plants look funny. good luck... coco is awsome... try to get your hands on some good coco, like the biobizz cocomix before you write off coco if it doesn't go well. -opt1c

thanks for the help guys! I'll feed em some ff grow big, I know its not pure organic...i should be able to get some better shit this weekend. what do you guys think about adding the lime? you can see the difference between the ones that got it and the one that didn't, but out of only a sample of 3 plants, the 2 bigger ones could be different phenos...

Yes, when you use distilled water your lacking your plants of the micronutes they need.

So the one that is showing red leaves edges is calcium def and the yellowing leaves is nitrogenl the bigger plants need fed.

The smaller seedlings are doing great; but I would never recommend using distilled water for seedlings since they need those micros to grow......

but just give them a little feeding every 5 to 7 days and they should be good; the bigger ones not the seedlings!

thanks stitch, I got some spring water now, will try to avoid distilled. So would it be a good idea to water in some dolomite on the smaller one showing the Ca def? All 3 are actually the same age (exactly 2 weeks today), only difference was the dolomite. the 2 that got it are on the 4th and 6th nodes, the one with out lime is on 3rd. Pretty big difference if you ask me!
