Haha yeah I've been slammed lately, sorry guys. working from home now, but honestly that just means there's more for me to do while I'm here!
We just finished trimming last night, took down 11 Space Bomb, 1 Wow and 2 Grape Stompers. Only filled three racks, so all threee of those strains are getting axed.
So the kief, a buddy of mine gave me 1.5 oz of kief to process into honey oil. I used frozen acetone, and rinsed it twice. Original wash was 20 grams, second wash 8 grams, third wash 2 grams. So 30 grams of oil out of 84 grams of kief. that means everything caught in the filter is insoluble vegetation, waxes, etc. So by weight,kief is 63% crap! Only 37% of it is psychoactive. That really amazed me. I have pics of the whole job, just haven't had time to upload and tag them.

Well, that seems to beg the question:
Were you expecting an exact correlation in mass (grams) between kief and oil? It seems only logical that if you use 1.5oz kief, you would NEVER get 1.5oz oil as your yield. I've made b.h.o. (using butane and turkey basters) with pure kief and the yield is always less than the amount that goes in.
The only way for weight in grams to be the 'exact same' (or 100% yield) on both ends of the equation would be if ALL of the material somehow made it thru to the bottom of the baster and into the final product in the pyrex dish below.
I guess the next question to be asked is, what does kief look like under a high res microscope? Is kief actually a conglomeration of loose trichomes as most people believe, or is it bits of plant material with trichomes mixed in..? Anyone want to chime in on this topic?

Ill pipe up abit on this kief story, Back before i moved to aussie, i had a really nice sharpstone grinder 4 piece, hash catcher the works, now out of that kief that got through i would say 70-80% was full trich, lucky i guess, but now over here i bought another grinder and its a Piece of crap, always seems to drop through way 2 much plant matter and i just dont get the same affect i had back on the grinder in New zealand.(i never made oil just squished the kief into a block when grinder got full.) im not sure if this diff grinder was just abit more budget or what but yeh thats my view on it haha.

Whats up? I follow your threads and love your big grow shows! Space bomb was no good? None yielded well or were quality? I ask because I have a few beans and I won't start em if I hear they're no good. I have too many others I want to start!
Concerning the keif oil you made...Isn't 1.5 oz only 42.5 grams (not 84)? Getting 30 grams of oil out of 42.5 grams of keif would be pretty damn good wouldn't it?!
Also, how are the smart pots holding up? I was thinking about vegging in 1 gallon smart pots and switching to 2 (or maybe 3) gallons for bloom. I thought they were more heavy duty material though not like thick felt...that doesn't sound like it will hold up with repeated use. What are the pros and cons of the smart pots and do you have any other recommendations? I will be doing canna coco E&F...Nutes are still a toss up too!..What do you use? I currently water for just 4 minutes a day...Isn't very long but I still think it might be too much...You said just 3 times a week is enough? Thanks for the help and keep up the good work!!!

To get a direct correlation between the keif and oil, the keif would have to be 100% trichs and the refinement would have to be 100% effective.
If it were a 100% correlation, then that would defeat the purpose of another extraction (or wash). The purpose of any extraction in Chemistry is to isolate the desired product.
Now, in the scientific method, we cannot simply assume because the mass changed that the starting product wasn't pure. We then would need something like HPLC testing to assess the qualities of the starting material after extraction. Perhaps certain cannabinoids were more soluble than others?
Now looking at how keif is made...The dry seiving of dried buds, I would have to assume that the fragile, overly dry buds get some plant material or something other than trichomes that gets through the micron mesh.

I think once I have a minute to breathe and can post the pics I'll really blow the lid off some kief-lovers' heads.
So last week we finished chopping the Space bomb, a couple straggler Grape Stompers and one wow. Not a great yield, I think the overall harvest will be about 7# this time. Space bomb is ok, it's frosty, chunky, turns purple at the end, not a great yielder, weak (VERY weak) stems, takes 9 weeks to finish, and mold-prone. Not running it again.
So today I've gotta pick up a bunch of soil, as tonight we're doing the big transplant from veg to flower. Tomorrow we'll up-pot veg from 4" to 2g pots, and bump the rooted clones from plugs to 4" pots. Whew!
Gotta run guys, tons to catch up on after being gone 4 days...

So we are done transplanting, the veg room has two runs of plants in it in 2g pots, the mother room has been fixed up and converted to a preveg room, two 8-bulb t-5's over 8 trays of 4" pots (also two crops.) Mostly Jackpot and blue dragon.
The veg room is a nice blend of JP, Blue Dragon, Purple AK and Wow, with some Purple gorilla stragglers and a dozen moms of different varieties and sizes. I have 40 grape stompers that are 2' tall in 4" pots I had no room for, was trying to axe the strain anyway so I left them for last, and we filled the room without em, woot! Not sure what to do with them now, lol.
Flower is gorgeous, the last run is something like:
27 grape stomper
23 Jackpot
2 Space bomb moms
1 blue dragon mom
2 purple gorilla moms
1 Pineappe thai mom (ouch, 11 week strain)
and I'm probably forgetting a few. Came to around 60 total I think.
The other half of flower is the Jackpots, with 1 BD mom, 2 GS moms and 2 Grape ape moms I think. The Jackpots come down in a week, they are all about 6' tall! This will be my biggest 8-bulb run yet, I can't wait to see the yield, I'm guessing around 10# total.
The last space bomb crop (plus 1 wow and 2 GS plants) are finally dry, will bundle those in with the jackpots next time everything moves out. They are gorgeous purple frosty nugs, smell just fine now, needs a couple weeks to cure anyway so that will be perfect.
I also had to replace all 5 of my water filters, ($300!) but my RO production skyrocketed, was getting REALLY bad with dirty filters. All is well!
Killed a few more rats and mice, after we chop the jackpot I need to tear down my foam/Tekfoil wall and put up plywood, fuck those little bastards! Keep chewing up my water lines and blumat lines, and eating poison and dying in the ceiling. Grrr. I found one last week crawling with maggots, barf. Was really hard to eat dinner after picking that mess up.

The show was really good, we went backstage and met them all, got my wifes old playgirl with Tommy signed, and gave them my only jar of OD Jackpot, best stuff Ive ever smoked. They both were blown away, and asked us to stick around. Later Tommy came and talked with us alone for a while, such a nice laid back dude. He asked if he could come chill at our house after their tour (!) and of course we said yes. We exchanged contact info and hope to hear from him soon! Literally got zero sleep last night, was too excited to sleep. Thanks to Krunch for the tip on the jar of pot, worked a peach!
Man that alone would be great already!

Hey lazy, I saw you posted in General Grievous' green dragon thread and had a question or two about your method. I didnt want to clog his thread up with something somewhat off topic so I figured I could find you here. You said you use qwiso to make your tincture? I was wondering if BHO would work just as well? And if that is the case, you decarb the plant material before you extract or decarb the extraction? Also, do you normally decarb if you are making qwiso for smoking or just for ingestion?
Now on to blumat questions, I know you are using those kent systems barbed fittings to attach the 8mm hose to any other...are you using a 3/32" drill bit to punch that hole in the 1/2" tubing? Also, when you are flushing do you just come by with a wand and handwater the last 2 weeks or do you just feed plain water through the blumats?

The blue dragon mom turned out ok, tastes like lemons and berries, kinda odd but has that famous "blue" tinge we all know and love. Very frosty, the plant was not pruned enough so there was a lot of popcorn. I'm flowering another mom right now but we pruned the shit out of it, the buds are ALREADY bigger at 3 weeks in than the previous BD tops. I have a bunch in veg and another round in preveg. had to spray them twice with Floramite, as the mites LOVE the BD! Stay tuned for more.
It was honestly surreal, I kept cool and tried not to gush, but it was pretty awesome meeting my favorite comedian and talking with him like a person. He's just a cool old guy that likes weed and jazz man.
Yep, been testing it on folks and it's awesome, very little taste (except for the schnapps!) and VERY potent.
Yep I bet BHO would work fine too, they are both similar extracts. I decarb the oil, not the plant matter. 275*F for 7 minutes does the trick just fine. I usually decarb the whole lot whether its for smoking or not, as I don't mark them for that and it's just as easy to do it all.
Actually I used the Kent barbed tees so I don't have to use their 8mm line, I use a 3/4" poly hose from the hydro store, and drill into that with the 3/32" bit, and attach the 3mm lines to the 3/32" barbs. I flush by dumping the barrel out, refill with RO, Floranectar and Final Phase, works great. It all goes through the blumats, no handwatering.

Take me through from day one of bloom.
Is the bulb hung even with the tops of the plants? etc. And than you raise it a little every day as the plants grow? Or is it hung above the plants throughout bloom?
