hey guys i'm going to be starting a new grow but i just thought i'd make a quick post about a basic growroom design feature that i think would be a big asset to anyone using 2 lights in a limited amount of space...actually my space is pretty unlimited but i think SCROG is the best way to keep plant numbers low and get a canopy that has maximum light efficiency.
Here we go...gonna post the pics then maybe go back and comment on some...Most speak for themselves...i use mason line, knotting and then melting the nylon to ensure no bullshit...
for materials i got
12 48" 1x3s
7 42" 1x3s
2 90" 1x3s
~160 feet of nylon mason cord. i feel nylon is key.
First up we got the 1x3s from home depot...for the record the wood totally sucked and was not 1x3 it was like .75x2.5 maybe...very much a pain in the ass drilling these things which is why i had to go with the two end pieces arranged as they are instead of attached as an outside wall...
done stringing the frame...the cord was interwoven to provide greater rigidity in supporting the plants...5 gallon (20L) bucket in foreground...
here is a cross-section view of the support slats i built...its 2 48" 1x3s sandwiching a couple of 6" blocks...the second block was situated at 36"...the frame will slide into the slats...
all 6 slats
I added crossbeams to reduce torsion between the frame and slats...i highly recommend this, nothing could be worse that bumping the screen and have it twist and gnarl up a canopy ack...
at first glance it may seem odd to put the blocks so low on the support slats but my intention was to slide the frame down, veg the plants about 4"-6" above the canopy and then have a second line of framing if i need to add additional screening...this would probably be done with netting but i may consider building another frame if the plants get real big but i am not anticipating very much stretching from my strains...
OK that's it for the setup...there are two sides, each is 45"x42" and each has about 120 holes in the screen...there is a 600W HPS for each side...the grow will be done in soilless containering but i firmly believe this would be an effective structure to grow a fastvegging DWC system underneath...on another aside the flooring is a 12'x12' sheet of panda film which i stapled to the walls and created flood/stain protection for the carpet underneath...i will probably get some cinder blocks to set at the corners of the sheeting and it slides a little but i like it a lot, it makes it look cleaner and is reflective...i also have the lightning 97 reflective material surrounding the scrog...there will be 12 container plants grown under two 1000W lights in front of this SCROG so it will be interesting to see them side by side...
I may come back and do another update about filling the screen in...but this is mostly just to get the hardware aspect for an effective SCROG frame in a visual format for those who might otherwise be put off from building it...it is a little work but use the mason cord with a pair of needle nosed pliers to thread the knots and it will go fast...i'll post a link when it gets filled in but i think the grow diary will probably be on OG...
peace,
