If your computer has a hdmi port on it the sound may be set to use the hdmi as the default device. Right click on the little speaker in the system tray then click "Playback Devices" be sure that "speakers" has the green check next to it. If it doesn't right click on speakers and select "set as default device"...

Yes thank you and I did all that as per advice by an IT guy.
It was a straight forward process with the service tag number on the back of this DELL.

Everything is installed correctly, I still cannot hear anything. Seems almost like both built in speakers have gone bad which is very unlikely the case.

It's a true mystery.

I don't know what else to do.

As a matter of fact I don't think anything else is left that can be done.....

Well there is one left... Format and reinstall windows. Now understand if all of a sudden they went bad the sound card might have went bad. Now if you updated or installed anything it could be a driver issue. But if you can back everything up and only as a last resort insert the window HOPEFULLY 7 dvd in the drive reboot and boot from the dvd and install that puppy.

I HIGHLY suggest if you do when you get to the part about selecting the drive letter to install to format the drive a couple of times to make sure is as clean as windows at least can get it.

Win 7 simply has newer drivers and will make life much easier for you compared to other operating systems. If you do not have win 7 pm me and I can show ya where to get a key to Best Buy..:jump:

Mrwags, the Ubuntu bit I'm posting will take a (hell of a) lot less time and help in troubleshooting.

One last thing I personally would try, and this would resolve once and for all whether it's a hardware or software issue. I would burn a LiveCD of Ubuntu and try running the laptop off of that (assuming your LT has a CD drive, if not then a flash stick or other memory device). It's very easy, and you can do all your browsing, emailing, etcetera, off the LiveCD and it doesn't remain in your history, cache, whatever. But that's not so much the point as it is to determine whether or not you're dealing with a hardware or software problem.

ComboFix , CCleaner and Sophos anti-rootkit are all essential bits of freeware that should be installed in all computers.
Sadly the IT techs don´t fancy this idea ;)
Congrats on solving the issue SH.
