i used to have cable internet, but now i use my laptop and my neighbors wifi connection. it is secure and he knows i am using it... its my router. on my desktop i used that program joe something to change ip address, but i'm not sure about using wifi and how to be safe. i have not posted any pics using my new setup, just regular posts. is it safe to use wifi for posting pics? would it be safe for my neighbor? i did a few searches but couldnt find any posts about this, although i dont usually have to much luck with the searches on ic. any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Not entirely sure what you are asking here but from what I gather, the best answer is: as far as security is concerned it doesn't matter whether you are using a wireless network or a wired one -- the internet doesn't see these as two different things. You should still go through the proper steps in masking your host (proxy, bounce, tunnel). Now if you are concerned about people sniffing the posts / pictures locally, that is a different problem and installing the wireless network with the proper security should do the trick. All in all you should act as if you were connecting to the internet through a wired router sitting in the middle of your grow room -- be safe.

uhm, spoof your MAC address. No I will not disclose how to do this, use your favorite search engine.

Then look for the thread "Protecting Yourself Online".

Spoofing your network card's mac address is a little over the edge.

Not quite necessary at all, unless you're waging electronic warfare.

tor with privoxy. :D

And only use secure connections with tor, like logging into websites over SSL, https://www.icmag.com
ya dig?

good info, thanks. didnt know about the ssl, i will go that route from now on :joint:

I just want to put this out there because I worked in IT Security for quite a while, I did many wireless seminars in DFW area.

Wireless is not secure, plain and simple. I would never use it for anything personal. Everything you're sending over the network is essentially floating out there in space waiting for people to intercept and decrypt and read. I've sniffed many wireless networks and sat there reading entire conversations people were having-- while they had zero knowledge.

Do NOT use wireless for personal/private use if you want to truly be safe. A proxy will not save you in this situation.

wep only works if you use it
I've sat in town with my lap top
and seen as many as 5 wireless
nets I could access

Considering your answer was already answered..... although if u have wpa-encrypted Wifi, its just as hard to spy on someone using that as a wired network. Make sure u note how someone said dont use WEP.... its encryption can be hacked in milliseconds.

As far as searching IC: make sure u go to "advanced search", then change the way it searchs to look in "TITLES ONLY" and not the whole thread.... this will help u a ton.
