The plant produces THC-A, which is necessary to convert to THC before consumption, through decarboxylation. Heat & oxygen exposure will decarboxylate

Thats exactly correct. Here is a good illustration of the pathway.

Heat causes THCA to convert to the Active form, Delta 9-THC through decarboxylation. Oxygen on the other hand, oxidizes the compounds, which degrades THC into Cannabinol (CBN).
