Kinked stem while LSTing..Can plant recover?

W

WheelsOG

Some of you may have read my other thread where i flowerd 8 plants and only got 1 runt female.

Well i've decided to try to reveg the one female plant. I moved my lights back to 24/0 last night.

From some reading i've done, it sounds like it will take up to 8 weeks to properly reveg this plant before i can take clones of it.

Anyways back to the original question. I figure since i have lots of time to get this plant going i'm going to try lsting out.

I made my first couple Ties last night and while doing so i applied too much pressure and the stem went from nicely bending to kinking. There is a 90 degee bend in the main stem.

I left the plant over night to see how it would look in the morning. Well this morning it appears as though some of the leaves are wilting, but nothing too crazy yet.

Just wondering if any of you have done LSTing and experienced something like this. Did the plant recover? Would it be best if i untied the plant and let it heal? Maybe even straighten the stem and prop it on a wood stick to keep it up.

Yes it will be ok
I use tape or a Splint.
Happens a lot. No Problem.
Make it strieght as possible and prop it with a stick and tape.

Splint that baby!! Easiest way is to take a drinking straw, slice it lengthwise (after cutting to length you need), place it over your kink and take a couple of twist ties to secure top & bottom.
Old dry stem, toothpicks, popsicle stick......any thing you can use to hold the stem straight while the plant scars over & rebuilds it. It's a semi common practice to gently snap stems to make em stronger.
If left bent over the flow of life is cut off....

also it can take up to 8 weeks to revegg....but you can get it done alot faster than that. i have a plant thats been reveggin for about a month...and shes just about ready to take clones from......i would say make sure you read the thread about revegging...if you havent already

Thx Sysprog. I had my plant propped up by taping it to a coat hanger :) Pretty ghetto, but it seemed to do the trick.
I was gonna put a splint on the plant, but after taking the plant off the coat hanger it seems like it can support its own weight fine. I'm going to see if the plant can make it on its own.

Thx for the link Darrin. I just read the first bit, but i'll have to read through the rest of the thread when i get a chance. Looks like some good info. Hopefully the thread will answer some of the questions i have. Like, Would my runt of a plant need to be pruned like the guys in the link? I imagine my runt doesn't have a huge root system yet.

I break my stems all the time on purpose. I like it better than topping and tie downs, but this is mainly for outdoor, where space is not an issue and latteral growth does not interfer with other plants around it, like it can with tightly packed indoor plants. I like breaks instead of topping bc it never iterupts it growing, like topping can for a day or so after the cut. With this technique I get plants that look like this:

It gives me tons of branches instead of just one big christmas tree shaped plant

This may sound stupid, but what the hell is LST, I always see that term on this site and never heard it anywhere else. thanks. highst

From the Glossary link in my sig:

LST Low Stress Training - A method of growing that slowly trains the plant to a specific height or shape. The training usually starts young by tying down the branches and growth shoots.

DJ High, Whats your technique for breaking branches? Sounds interesting. Do you have any links?

Thanks guys for the heads up on the "lingo"

I dont really do anything special with the breaks. I got the idea from a HT article a few years back called "supercropping" and I have seen others incoperate it too. I usualy do breaks on branches when its getting a little crowded in one area of the plant so I will break the branch away from the the main stem, about 4-5 nodes from the top. Sometimes the branch stays bent and sometimes it perks back up twice as thick with lots more lateral/bushy branching. Either way it helps increase bushiness. Sometimes I will pinch it the stem and soften the branch before bending over to help the branch not break all the way. Hope this explaination helps. I will try to get some more pics of this in action. peace_highst
