NASHVILLE, Tenn.- Metro police seized 198 pounds of marijuana during a traffic stop on Interstate 40.
Police stopped a tractor-trailer Monday for traveling without a license plate as it headed toward downtown on Interstate 40 near Bellevue, according to a Metro police news release.
Officer Bill Morgan asked driver Michael Lennon, 41, of Covington, Ga., if he could check the vehicle for contraband.
Lennon agreed and while inspecting the sleeper compartment, Morgan found 12 wrapped bales of marijuana underneath cots.
Police said Lennon's rig also had a legitimate shipment of electronic components Lennon and his partner, Douglas Hightower, 35, were transporting from California to Nashville.
The drugs were worth an estimated $50,000. The drugs' origin is under investigation. It also wasn't clear whether the final destination for the marijuana was Nashville or Atlanta.
The two Georgia men were charged with possession of marijuana for resale. They were held in the Metro Jail in lieu of $100,000 bond each.
How do you consent to search with 200 lbs of pot in the damn truck?!
