Got pulled over tonight out of state on the highway with a zip of dry sift in my backpack, and fresh cuts in a cup. I always drive exactly the speed limit, on cruise control, but apparently I didn't slow down fast enough leading up to a toll. Cop was right at the divider, pulled up behind me and lit me up.
First thing I did was stuff the fresh cuts in my mouth. First time I ever had to do that. The stems were a little woody and tough to swallow without a lot of chewing. Didn't manage to swallow it as he came up to the window. Played it off like I was chewing some food and then .choked it down while answering questions.
After formalities and info he went to his car and came back with a warning, and then asked if I have anything illegal in my car, any drugs, weapons, anything I shouldn't have. I kept my cool, looked him straight in the eye and said no. He asked if I would give him permission to search the car, I just shook my head and said I don't really have time for that man. It's New Years, it's cold, and I have somewhere I have to be.
He just said OK, drive safe.
I was pretty surprised it went so smoothly. Seen a lot of videos of people denying a search and seen it go both ways. I think the key thing for me was not showing any signs of nervousness, and being completely sober as I almost always am when driving.
Just goes to show you what can happen when you flex your constitutional rights and stay calm, collected, and congruent.
Lesson learned: Always secure all items before traveling. I'm glad I had those cuts within arms reach though. Coulda gone real bad if they were in the trunk or something and this went the wrong way.
