Just cant make it work with an EZ Clone machine

So a few weeks ago I was gifted a small EZ Cloner. I thoroughly cleaned it with a bleach solution, cleaned the pump, replaced all the nozzles, and got all new neoprene plugs.

I cut the clones with a 45 degree angle. Split the stem a little and scrapped the last inch of the stalk or so. I then placed each cutting in a shot glass with about an inch of clone x gel. They all sat in the Clonex for about 10 minutes. After all my cuttings were done I fitted them into the collar plugs. I used plain water that was at 140ppm, water was ph'ed to 5.8, and water Temps in the ez clone have been stable at 73F. I also added 1 cap full of H202 to the rez.

Well it has been 10 days, and still no roots. My tops are starting to wilt and the stems inside the cloner are turning brown and mushy. Pretty sure from researching this is what damping off is.

So what did I do wrong? I cleaned the machine thoroughly. I used the same cloning technique I have used before with rockwool plugs with great success. I kept my pH and temps within range. Yet looks like I still failed and all my clones will be dead soon.

I really want to like this EZ Clone. But im at a loss.

I will help you out my friend I use aeroponics to clone then to soil

I started them Feb.16

First pic is Feb.24

Second pic is Feb.28

Third pic is on Mar.2 day I transplanted to soil

Now this is how I do it, I use the whole Clonex line - cloning gel, cloning solution (for water in aeroponic), Mist (cloning mist)
I don't leave my clone in the gel btw I just dip them, I also use to large air stones and a air pump from my local pet store and I have a Titan control Apollo 3 it's for the water pump it turn it on 1 min and off 4 or 5 mins I forget but it helps and you need it in a aeroponics cloner but here I go from the beginning take a cup of tap water fill it up 3/4 take it with you to your plant your taking cuttings cut the cutting off the donor plant and put straight into cup of water it keep the cutting fresh and no air bubble will be at the cut, take them to the cloner in the cup still cut off lower growth you won't need, then cut the stem again where you want it too root at a 45degree then I split the end of the stem with a xacto knife then right back into the cup of water so no air bubbles will form then I dip it in the cloning gel about 1 1/2-2" then put them in the neoprene and cup and your done. Make the water with the cloning solution before you start and I use 2 gallons it's perfect I ph to 5.8 let it go to about 6.2-6.5 then ph again I change the water every 3-7 day depends what it smells and looks like I keep my t5 about 3' away and use the mist for atleast the first week a couple of a lot of times a day it will keep them nice and moist. Hope I helped

i use the ez clone with 100% success.

5ml per gal of water of the ez clone solution ph'ed to 5.8

i then get a cup of the water from the cloner.

cut at 45. split and scrape all within 10 seconds. the faster the better.

and then just place it into the cup as you get more clones, after i have about 10 clones i place them all in the cloner.

roots within 5 days always.

maybe try just going faster when you cut it.

and ALWAYS make sure the blade is SHARP.

as crushing the stems causes them to wilt off.

no scissors only razor blades

What are you using for lighting and how close? Do you check your ph daily or just the first day?

Different strains take different times I have 4 different strains in that cloner 18 clones all 4 strains root differently

sounds like those cuts are toast. once u have mushy stems that cut is pretty much ruined.
45degree angle is irrelevant imo, scraping ur cuts may be the problem. too much moisture soaking the cut. also i like to take my cuts and let them soak in plain water for 24 hrs or over night at least. they should be perking up and praying to the lights. should b ready for the cloner.
i always put clone machines on timers usually 45 min on 15 off, but several intervals work, just no longer than 15 min off. also ur rez temp isnt crazy high but id shoot for more like 65-70. possible ur cloner is getting hotter than 73 during the day? whenever i had brown mushy rotted cuts it was from warm rez and oversaturated cuts. hope some of that helps

Take a look at snypes thread on cloning with the ez-cloner..works 100%..very straight forward..also..if your having problems with root rot..look at richyrich's hydro tea recipe..you would have to leave out the bleach in snypes recipe..but..turn on the cloner and walk away..just keep it topped up with water and check the ph every 4-5 days..kept clones in the cloner for thirty days with this method..
Best of Luck

this is spot on, in my experience w/ the 16 site ez-cloner the pump can raise the water temp enough to inhibit rooting.

The only thing I would do different is submerging the cut while cutting and scraping.

I usually leave a 1/2" or so extra on the stem of a clone when I cut it from the mum. Then toss the cuts into a tub of water and re-cut your 45* and scrape all while under water. Quick dip into cloning gel then to your plug. The water bath stops air bubbles from being trapped in the stem as well as keeps bacteria out of the fresh cut.

Just what I have found to be the biggest difference in success regardless of medium.

Hey yall, ive been on the EZ cloner for a while, i just use straight tap water at 7.7ph (straiggt from the tap) just like they say in the instructions. Works every time, if your getting mushy stems, the water is probably getting too warm. When it was getting warm in my area, i was having to exchange a quart of water twice a day for cold water to keep the temps down. If you need to keep them in there longer than that, then id a a weak nute solution, no need for rooting hormones or anything like that. That and clean it out every 3 weeks or so.

Echoing jointventure420 : Snypes thread on cloning, look for the area in which he speaks of antibiotics used with tropical fish care.

Rendar, if you can, post your water temp before you try any of the crazy stuff, I root all kinds of crap in mine that is usually a lot harder than cannabis with no issue.

From where I am sitting there is no grey area with the EZ cloner principle. People either love them or hate them. Myself I just couldn't get it to work. I clone with perlite now, never looked back, more than five years ago!!

But the photo evidence speaks for itself, some peeps get amazing results!!

Most important aspect of aeroponic cloning is the res water needs to be below 72. 68 is the highest I like to see.

too cold is almost as bad as too hot for me

I put a cheap 50 watt heater in mine this past run and i had great results at 75 degrees.

I always run plain tap water no hormones and 2 drops bleach per gallon.

there are a few months in the summer that mine gets too hot to run well.

This is how I clone also, I don't use a light over them...just residual light in the veg room.

1. proper ph water
2. proper water temperatures
3. No Dome - spray lightly with plain water 2-3x daily
4 -- Optional rooting hormone like rapid start or clonex AFTER 3 days of plain water
5 -- Optional clear res 2 drops after 7 days to prevent any bacteria forming

i do not like to scrape stems or cut a slit in bottom of my stems....clean 45 and gel dip, quicker the better so no air embolisms form and slow or kill clone growth

i use the clone king aero machine.....their site recommends no dome and no nutrients for 3 days and it has worked like magic so far

OK I see a lot of you guys worrying about water temps, well I use to then one day just got lazy and saw no difference so only thing I recommend don't let water temps hit above 79°F mine stays from 75-76°F all the time if I hit 78 I throw ice in the res but this is me I'm not saying its good I just don't care lol my flowers are more important then a few clones to me and I don't check pH or ppm after I put in ice unless its been a few days(3-4days) since the last time I checked it and I still get 100% success rates!! It takes money to make money so invest in good cloning supplements like the full Clonex Line!!!
