A pioneer of Colorado’s medical marijuana industry is leaving the state for greener pastures – in New York.

Josh Stanley, who helped get legislation passed to legalize marijuana and opened the Peace in Medicine Center, Denver’s first medical marijuana dispensary, said he’ll completely relocate to New York.

He plans on opening four medical marijuana clinics and two marijuana farms there.

“I got tired of looking in the paper and seeing ads for joints,” Stanley said. “You see companies getting in on the ‘Green Rush’ … They’re peddling dope.”

Stanley said he wants to focus on cannabis-based pharmaceuticals.

“It’s become clear that the intention in New York is focused solely on medical,” he said. “One of the things in the bill is no smoking raw flowers, so it’s just concentrates.”

That’s a stark contrast to the Colorado marijuana industry, where 148,000 pounds of marijuana buds that are used for smoking were sold in 2014, according to a report released by Colorado’s Marijuana Enforcement Division.

“We’re identifying compounds that will stop epilepsy, compounds that stop cancer and stop the progression of autoimmune diseases,” he said. “We’re not just making an industry, we’re making standardized medicine.”

Stanley is focusing on creating ways to administer cannabis that doctors will find familiar. He’s researching how to design cannabis-based pills, topical solutions for joint pain and eczema and nebulizers for seizures and Parkinson’s disease.

“We’re not talking about brownies or lollipops anymore,” he said. “We’re adults now, and those are like Flintstone vitamins.”

Stanley plans to open four medical clinics across New York state. And he said he hopes to plant two 1,000-acre farms to supply his operation. One of the farms will focus on a marijuana growing operation, and the other will be geared toward research and development.

The four clinics and two farms will cost upwards of $10 million, Stanley said. Because marijuana operations are still federally illegal, he can’t seek any loans from banks. The entire project is being funded by private investors.

Stanley’s local Peace in Medicine operation on 38th Avenue shut down over the summer and was replaced by a new dispensary.

Stanley hasn’t signed a lease on any of his clinics or farms yet. He has about 15 locations in mind and plans on narrowing those locations down in the next month.

There are three factors that Stanley considers when assessing possible clinic and farm locations: ease of access for patients, proximity to research institutions and the state of local economies.

The clinics and farms will bring about 200 new jobs to New York, Stanley estimates.

“I want to hire a lot of veterans,” he said. “These kids come back and their only training is battle. There’s not a lot of opportunity for them.”

Stanley hopes to be licensed to grow by July. Once he’s licensed, he can begin growing plants immediately.

“There’s a large number of children right now who have epilepsy and no access to medication,” he said. “We have a plan to get plants in the ground and meds to them sometime in late October.”

Stanley has an extensive resume in the pot industry. He founded Colorado’s first medical marijuana lobby, the Medical Marijuana Industry Group. He helped draft two bills on pot regulation alongside then-governor Bill Ritter. He and his brothers also created the “Charlotte’s Web” strain, which was featured in a CNN documentary in 2013. The strain has been used to treat severe epilepsy in children.

“I’m a firm believer that we’re looking at a new biotechnological industry,” he said “I think that New York has the potential to be the epicenter of that.”

Stanley spends much of his time advocating medical marijuana outside of the U.S. He’s currently working with the governments of Jamaica, Poland and the Czech Republic to help develop medical marijuana regulation plans.

Although he’s moving his business out of Colorado, Stanley said that he’ll remain a resident.

“I still live in Colorado, in Evergreen. I try to come back as often as I can,” he said. “But most of the time I spend in the air.”

I've always thought this was going to end up being the case. Weed will eventually get so cheap and abundant that flowers would go by the way side and concentrates would step to the fore. Not saying that no one would smoke flowers anymore, but I think the tide is shifting...especially with some medical consumers not wanting (or having the ability) to "smoke" anything these days.

A drone flying over that with a big male plant or even a male planted along the boundaries and dusting pollen would ruin that investment

Yup chunky , looks like he paid his dues & is in . I'm glad for the medical community that this is happening & the job market here too . but its still just big pharmacy moving in & feeding the local governments pockets . i hope this guy does good for the patients here , there are alot that really need it .

this will in no way affect the bud market here at all though . it will introduce concentrates & vaping to a state that has very little info on doing it properlly . alot of backyard wax makers here blowin themselves up cuz their stoned watching youtube vids & sayin ....Yo dude , we can do that !!! & a half hour later the rescue squad is on the way !!! or they're passing off shit that still has butane or alcohol in it .

but anyways ..... the bud market will not be effected by this guy or any like him in NY for the near future . if & when they federally legalize it (the only way NY will ever let it be legal ) then the bud market will crash .

When the "Green Rush" comes to each state it will bring out the best and the worst there is to offer - a literal representation of "free market economics". The downside being bad flowers, bad concentrates and extracts, bad business, rip off artists and outright deception.

I love what Josh Stanley started in CO, but to hear him talk now is just hypocritical. When he was growing plants outdoors it was OK but now he's "seen the light" and that the sole answer is "pharmaceutical medicine" and everybody else is "peddling dope"????

I get that not everybody can ingest cannabis via smoking or even vaping. I think that for a lot of people he's on the right track with nebulizing but in my mind that's kissing cousins to vaping so no big diff there.

I think that the majority of people in this country that could benefit from cannabis could vape or smoke it and that most of them do not need concentrate or extract doses. There is unquestionably a minority who cannot smoke/vape and need a much higher dosage of medicine to address their symptoms, but again I believe that this is the minority that we are talking about.

I'm not comfortable now with the number of teens/young adults I see talking about dabs and waxes, but it appears to be the cool thing to do, and smoking/vaping flowers is not.

I think what Josh understands but doesn't want to plainly say is that now that cannabis is legal in Colorado, he wants to produce "medicine" in a manner that is so exclusive/expensive that he won't have nearly as much competition as he does currently, so he's moving his operation to New York.

The business executive in me says "Great job picking your new market Josh, excellent business savvy!" The smoker in me calls his reasons BS. This is a money grab plain and simple.

This is America, he is not doing anything that any other corporation with competent management wouldn't do, but like 99% of all corporations, don't believe his published justifications for his actions, this is all about money.....

I will never get tired of seeing ads for marijuana coming from a state where it's illegal. "Peddling dope" legally is freedom.

Weren’t the Stanley Bros originally growing and supplying med dispensaries in CO? THC strains? And couldn’t give away CBD strains.

Kudos they were instrumental in the legalization process in CO and there endeavors to help patients but at times they send a mixed message.

I've thought about this for a long time, I don't think that's the case. Concentrated forms have been around for such a long time I think it's safe to say people just prefer flower sometimes. Unless people are forced to choose oil I think there will always be some demand for flower.

What dan said is true, the way NY set it up allows for very specific conditions to be treated. Point being, the rec market and the majority of the medical market still won't be accounted for in terms of on the books production.

His cannabis has the ability to ruin cannabis genetically by creating harmful trends, using his celebrity to promote breeding and funding for high CBD varieties that neutralize the high you get from smoking marijuana .

He just said he doesn't support recreational. I don't support high CBD strains. I don't like high CBD strains.

CBD,If it becomes a fanatical movement or government initiative, it could setback the develop of really good cannabis. But... it won't stop it.

Releasing Charlotte's Web pollen into the wild is basically be akin to releasing a chemical weapon. I suppose the government could air spray many generations of outdoor crops with Charlotte's Web and destroy the work of breeders that didn't have high end sealed grow houses, i.e. government g man style growhouses.

I'll shut up before the hellfire hits.

it also helps that NY state has an initiative where new businesses coming into the state don't have to pay any corporate taxes for 10 years.
His profits would be further through the roof than they already are.
