Very sad to hear the news today of the death of John Martyn. Its not everyday that friends ring me up to tell of this sad news, all genuinely upset. Many stories related, many drinks shared. I saw him play loads of times, he was one of us, a smoker & a joker & was one of the finest guitarists I had the privilige to listen to. He combined folk jazz blues & rock to come out with something very unique. Eric Clapton once said of Martyn he was "so far ahead of everything else it was inconceivable". For those who havent heard him, his early work with bassist Danny Thompson takes some beating. Try listening to the albums Solid Air, One World & Inside Out, pull up a comfy chair, roll a fat one & enjoy, I know I still do. John enjoyed a drink & a smoke, & would often be seen at the bar before a gig, usually trying to hustle a spliff.
I discovered Solid Air & Marijuana at the same time, & both of them changed my perspectives, possibly for ever.
God rest you Johnny boy, Thanks for turning so many of us on !!!!!!!!!!!
We'll miss you.
