How did you, do you get your jobs?

It just occurred to me, I have no idea how to fill out a job application. I've filled out one in my life.

I got the first job from Joe. Then, Pete got me a job. Then Pete and Dan got me a job. Then Neil got me a job. Then I gave Dan and Neil a job. And so on.

All of my employment for over 20/25 years has been friends.

It all depends on the field you are in, in my opinion. In my line of work (engineering) a good resume goes a long way. I have found that finding the key phrases in the job description, then placing those phrases strategically in the resume works well. HR at large companies use word-search programs that filter out applicants this way.

When I apply for a job that I am seriously interested in getting I will spend 6-10 hours researching the company, tailoring my resume, writing a cover letter, and filling out the application.

A well written cover letter and resume. Embellish but don't lie, take the skills you have and polish them so sound like you're the best at what you do. Interview like a salesman for yourself, dress in your best, be confident, look people in the eye and have a firm handshake.

I took a looooong sabbatical and was able to get a really good job with very little effort, if I can do it anyone can.

screw signing yourself into slavery for a rich man and/or govt that wants to oppress you and what you choose to do in your free time, shove applications and resumes, nooses AKA ties around your neck... well you know... maybe you were just waiting for a response like this floralheart, but you had the right idea and if that still works, as I wish it did for me, I'd say go for that all the way!
